Kyle: [00:00:00] Welcome back to another episode of The Briefcase in the Barn with me and Gary in a, a series of the Furious Curious Show where we talk about business, life, Christianity, and more. Episode 43. Good to see you. Gary. Crude oil. Nice shirt. What's that all about?

Gary: Crude oil is super useful. Yes, it is. And then on the back it has all the derivatives of crude oil, which is pretty interesting.

Okay. It's a conversation starter. What are the derivatives of crude oil? Oh, everything. Gas, diesel. Like everything. Everything. Everything. Natural plastic. You're. Office, charity. Oh yeah. Everything. Clothing, like, it's crazy. Oh, that is good. That is good. I like that. Everything, right? Nobody likes oil until they have to walk around naked and not drive a car.

Yeah. I'm a big Canadian energy

Kyle: guy. Right. That's good. Oh, it's just, I heard Alberta was actually, uh, their premier was, um, asking for some guarantee of some clause or whatever. Oh, yeah. On the pipeline standing clause or, yeah. Yeah.

Gary: Yeah, it's super interesting, super interesting seeing where people land politically on stuff like that.

Right. And then all of a sudden, yeah, [00:01:00] people get all worked up oil's in the toilet. It's actually the biggest. I'm pretty sure in history it's the biggest deviation between, uh, the price of oil and the price of gold. Okay. Gold's so high and oil is so low. Okay. Why is that per barrel right now? $58. Like Oh, wow.

Very low in 2008 when money was worth way. Uh, more, um, I think it was at one 40 something. Yeah. So. But the gas prices certainly cheap, but the gas prices don't reflect it. I know. Well, I mean a little bit like, I mean obviously in 2022, oil went to like $120 a barrel in, in, in, uh, in that time period. And then at that time I think gas with diesel was probably like two 20 a liter or something like that.

So is it now? So

Kyle: I never fell up. Right.

Gary: Buck 40, that's right.

Kyle: Electric vehicle only. Yeah. It's interesting. It reminds me of, uh, when the floods happened a couple years ago here in Chillowak and we were completely blocked off and all the gas stations are running outta gas. Uh, but I had power still so I could still whip around.

It was the, it was kind of funny 'cause usually people always give me shit, right? What are you [00:02:00] gonna do when, when, uh, the power's out, uh, or whatever. Um, you take a generator with you in the car or whatever. Give me crap for having electric cars. So, yeah,

Gary: I have electric truck and I get a lot. It's so they, again, it's a conversation starter.

People always ask. I think it's, um. It's if you have one vehicle, I mean, I don't know how you guys feel with one electric vehicle. I guess you're not doing a lot of big road trips and if you were, you know, maybe you do a vehicle trade or something with somebody, which is, I go to Alberta, it just, yeah, no problem.

You just, no problem. Okay. So I'm not doing that. Like, I'm not stopping for 35 minutes to charge it. I mean, it's different. How many times would you have to charge stop? Three times? Uh, probably a little more than that. Probably four

Kyle: times.

Gary: Yeah. For, for 35, 40 minutes each time.

Kyle: Um, yeah, roughly. It just depends.

I mean, with kids, I'm stopping anyway. To let 'em run around. Like I'm not like, okay for fruit or else like that. So it's not that big of a deal. Right. You could taking a, even if you stop for a bathroom break for 15 minutes, you were all of a sudden, like you have enough again to go to the next stop. So yeah.

I don't mind

Gary: the idea for me of stopping to charge. Like I have never, never. I have probably charged one time, not [00:03:00] at my house that night.

Kyle: Oh, okay. With my truck. But you don't have superchargers either with your

Gary: truck. Uh, you do now. 'cause you have the Tesla, the Ford has the adapter for Tesla, so you can use the Tesla superchargers, but, and you can use stage three chargers anyways.

You can use it pretty fast. I mean, it's probably not as good as the Tesla chargers, but uh, just the idea for me of sitting there and filling out, like waiting for your, there again, you can multitask or do other things, but yeah, to plan around it feels, feels, uh, anyways, I was, uh, have you had a busy day?

Busy week. What day is it today? Tuesday.

Kyle: Um, yeah, a lot of, um, discovery calls, um, people just coaching people. Yeah. A lot of coaching. Okay.

Gary: It's like reading an intake form for Freedom Sessions or what?

Kyle: Oh, you're having actual call with someone? Oh, yeah, they're, and wanna know about the coaching or Okay. Or what they can do for them and, and, um,

Gary: interesting.

Basically your sales pitch then, except you don't sell, I mean, you're selling yourself, but, yeah. Well, you usually try to give value. Yeah.

Kyle: Yeah. [00:04:00] Show where you're gonna add value. Yeah. Or, or offer value and give some insight, whatever. And, and, yeah. So, and yeah, answering lots of journals. Um, people journal every day.

Okay. Yeah. Three people in the, in the 10 week program and now. Okay. Busy. Okay. Show notes. My energy's low right now.

Gary: Uh, my energy's good, eh? Yeah. So I was just out in the sun, right? I was driving tractor. How long, which I haven't disked, like I haven't worked on a tractor out, and this is embarrassing. It's a briefcase in the barn.

My wife said it's about time I get doing some barn work, but like I bet you it's been 15 years since I've disked a field and I was disking this morning and gonna power her later and plant corn hopefully in the next few. This, yeah, it was

Kyle: still, uh, quiet enough in the tractor there. You can take calls. No, I'd stop.

Oh, how are you stopping? Uh, quite often

Gary: it's not a lot of disking happening and people are like, oh, what's that racket? Turn that racket off some realtor. I'm trying to get a deal done. Right. I'm like, and I think I got the deal done. But you just, you wanted to do it or you enough [00:05:00]

Kyle: about people, the disc or,

Gary: yeah, I just wanted to do it the therapeutic.

Right. I had a bank meeting this morning with my bank and it was just painful. Right. It's painful. It's very difficult dealing with banks right now. It's much, so much different. 'cause ah, they're just so scared. Scared. Oh, they're so scared. They're so paranoid. They used to be so loose, right? Yeah. Like for so many years you basically, whatever you go out, you ask for, they give you stuff you didn't want.

Yeah. Now you kind of need something or you want something and it's like, no, not happening. Even if it does make sense, they're just, their ability, their caps on lending is pretty low, I think, and they're just, their risk, uh, management, they're, they've totally changed how they do things, so. Hmm.

Kyle: Okay. Reading some show notes here, Judy Bars know we Pray first.

Gary: Oh yeah, it was really funny. My parents took, uh, Marie and I out for dinner on Saturday night. It was really nice. And afterwards we were just talking about the podcast and I mean, Marie was just making fun of me saying, you know, like sometimes we're not that connected, but you, I talk enough to other people and I talk enough on the podcast that if she listens to it, she knows everything she missed.

Uh, 'cause and then. And then I was like, well, like I'm actually [00:06:00] pretty careful what I say and pretty reserved. And I'm like, I said to my mom, like, we pray before the podcast. You you know, she's like, oh, I can tell, I can tell. It would be way worse if you didn't She said, I'm so impressed with how, how, uh, how careful you are, what you say.

So I thought that was pretty funny. It's just funny how well your parents know you. Right. And when I'm with my parents, I have no filter. Oh, okay. Like, I'm completely safe with my parents. Right, okay. Like they're, that's pretty cool. It is cool. Like they're. Uh, they're fun people and they're, they're gracious and obviously, I mean, I've become a little more sanctified, thankfully over time, and obviously say less inappropriate things, but Yeah.

Kyle: Yeah.

Gary: But I don't share every last thing that I would say in front of my parents on the podcast, and my mom's aware of that. And she's thankful. I think most are thankful. Most people are thankful. That's true. I mean, I wouldn't

Kyle: want to

Gary: anyway. Well,

Kyle: no, there's sometimes I do want to, I just,

Gary: I always struggle with it because if I had to say the thing that I get praised for the most in my life.

It's for being authentic and being transparent. So it's, it is always that line of, but I think there is a [00:07:00] swath of people that can be offended and I don't think I want to unnecessarily offend. And I do think that you lose your wit witness very quickly. On all ends of the spectrum, right? It's no different than the Christian that's hyper religious about a day of the week or something.

And then their business dealings are just not that. That's right. Great to deal with. So you can be that way on the other end too, where you can, you know, act quite spiritual and then you're saying offensive things that are are good. So you just say offensive things in private. Say less. Just say less, say less.

Gary: Same theme as last week. Shouldn't be doing the podcast anyways. It was just funny that my mom was very aware of that. Okay. There was divine intervention. Okay, based on how many 43 weeks

Kyle: are you talking about you? You interrupting me?

Gary: No, it's not an issue. I said it's not an

Kyle: issue.

Gary: She just likes knowing what's going on in my life and yeah, I don't have to go there for coffee as much. Awesome

Kyle: efficiency. Not true.

Gary: Not

Kyle: true. Uh. How do [00:08:00] you, um, I was stuck at, uh, listening to Dave Curry this week do a talk. Because he does a talk on, um, like his

Gary: regroup talk.

Yeah.

Kyle: Okay. Yeah. So, um, any guy can join that, right? Yeah. Any guy. So I, so I do a, a, um, I hadn't gone for a while and I started, started going again. So Tuesday mornings at 6:30 AM he does a talk for about 35 minutes. Anybody can join. And he, um, it's all guys. Uh, and he does talks about like how to, how to be a better dad.

Um, very much surrounded as sex addiction or like pornography, masturbation, whatever, all that, all that stuff. And he just talks and you break out into the groups. That he was sharing how he's had an account, he doesn't call it an accountability partner, he just calls it a, a friend because he's so open with him.

But for like 40 years now, he's met with, um, the same guy, I think 38 years with one guy and eight years with another guy. But la the last three, eight years with a guy every single week and they like, hold each other too. Um, account, just doing the right things. Yeah. And just like, like ask challenging questions.

Okay. And, and, and get real. And, and, um, so I've, I've been doing that for, um. Like 10 [00:09:00] years now with a, um, good friend of mine. Um, and, um, it's really helpful and I find that if you're not doing it, it's just easy to, you know, kind of be vague or whatever on how you're doing with people. I. And not actually like, have someone allow someone to, 'cause it's not something that you, you can't put the responsibility in other people to ask you the hard questions.

You have to invite it and allow, allow it in and ask people to call you to, uh, a greatness and account. Um, and so I know that I do that for a lot of guys. I know you do that for a lot of guys, but I was curious, like, who does it for you? Like who in your life would call you to, uh, account,

Gary: um, other elders?

For sure. I mean, it was kind of one of the things that came up at our last elders meeting. I, well, I even asked for it. There's one area where it's like, I really struggle and I'm like, Hey, do you guys mind just kind of checking in on me on this? Um, you ask me. I mean, not necessarily like pointedly, but, um, I think I'd be, I think I'm pretty honest with you.

Um, I'm [00:10:00] pretty honest with my wife too. I also, it's interesting that like, if I think of how I've set myself up, it's um, I don't have any. Um, software on my phone or computer, anything that is at all protecting me from seeing stuff I shouldn't. And so it's very interesting. And now that my son's 10, I'm thinking, okay, like I'm a fool now not to have something.

Mm-hmm. 'cause even accidentally it could happen. Yeah. Curry was saying he has it on his computer at home Yeah. For his grand grandkids. And the Yeah, it makes sense. And even for myself, it's not like I'm opposed to it. And I, I would just think that, like I say, I don't ever think of it. Um, it's also interesting 'cause I have a, a guy that works for me that sees everything I do.

And like he's on my Google accounts. He's, he sees every email, every text, every social media thing. I have, like my Instagram, everything. There's like three other people on all of them. And it's just a cool way to live where it's like fully open. Yeah. Like, and I literally, like, you could look through any of my browser history.

There might be something kind of weird and I'm be like, okay, that's kinda awkward. But it's not like,

Kyle: yeah,

Gary: it's not [00:11:00] like, oh wow. Like I sh you know, and there it's not like I'm perfect and there are things I've looked at. I shouldn't, I'm not trying to pretend that. Yeah. It's more just, I'm willing to be.

Have that bit of shame and guilt and then say, Hey, that was, I shouldn't have. You know what I mean? And I think that's where the danger spot is. And for most people, my experience has been most people have some level, a little bit of things that they're looking at or something that they're doing that they're ashamed of.

Right. And then once you have any of that, you're constantly like being beaten down with, Hey, you're, you're not worthy. Right? Yeah. And so, um, or you're a

Kyle: fraud

Gary: or, yeah. I have another, going back just before I forget, back to Dave Curry's thing, would that be something where if somebody was listening to this and they're like, Hey, I got no accountability.

Would it be pretty, would it be intrusive for them to sign up or would it be very easy for them to reach out to doing family right. And say, Hey, I wanna get in that. Very, and, and there's d groups get, there's

Kyle: also like a, there's in-person ones on Thursday nights and I think another night of the week we Wednesday nights as well.

Gary: But they could literally join a Zoom group Yes. With a link and not, yeah, there's casual fin.

Kyle: There's a guy from Finland that, that's on there. Are

Gary: they getting questioned on how they're doing in this group, or not necessarily?

Kyle: Yeah. Well, you break, you go break out into groups of [00:12:00] three at the end of the talk, whatever.

And then Dave has a list of questions that you all answer. So, yeah, it, so it's pretty, most of the time it sucks and it's uncomfortable and it's hard.

Gary: Um, but it's, but it'd be a way for someone listening to this who didn't wanna reach out to someone they knew. They could kind of just go totally off the grid and,

Kyle: yeah.

Yeah.

Gary: Yeah. Because sometimes people have an easier time just talking to people they don't know. It's interesting. Yeah. I

Kyle: mean, yeah, a hundred percent. It's usually the people that are closest to that. We don't wanna be known around.

Gary: Yeah. Well it's 'cause we have the most to lose when it comes to risk, right?

Because we're where the relationship could be risk and then we're so scared

Kyle: of losing, being judged. Or it's often in evangel evangelism as well, right? People will often say, uh, I like, they'll talk to like someone on the plane, uh, about God or whatever. You know, someone they don't know about, but their family member that's lost their,

Gary: they don't dare broach it.

That's fair.

Kyle: I would fall in that camp too. No, just, yeah. Interesting. Fear of rejection, fear of. Yeah. Why do you think in, um, so many men in the church, um, have such a strong resistance to being known and acknowledging their [00:13:00] weaknesses? Like what, what is the, if the, if the, the whole, I don't think

Gary: it's just in the church.

I think it's everywhere. I think it's all men.

Kyle: Okay. Yes. I would probably

Gary: worse outside of the church.

Kyle: Yeah. Almost.

Gary: Okay.

Kyle: But the church is a place where

Gary: it

Kyle: should be. Yeah. I mean, the whole point of us being Christian just 'cause we don't have it together, like we're we are,

Gary: yeah. But that's not how we practically look at church.

We literally spent our whole time at church trying to look the right way. We literally dressed a certain way we like as much as that is. It's funny that we're having this conversation 'cause I had a heart, heart with a guy after church on Sunday and it was very raw and very honest and there again it was like shocking.

Even to me it was to some degree. And I'm like, hey, this is kind of like, this is what church is supposed to be. Yeah, yeah. This is like, it's happening anyway, so why would we not be talking about it? Like is it less wor, is it less info? 'cause it's not being talked about all of a sudden or, but there again, I think there's such an aversion.

Um, my, my thing I always come back to is everybody just wants everybody else to be okay. 'cause they cannot live in the uncomfortableness. It's, it's, I see it over and over. Uncomfortable.

Kyle: What, what are they uncomfortable about?

Gary: [00:14:00] They're uncomfortable of being, um, just not able to deal with the situation or not being in control or not have an answer.

So like, if someone, like, I've had it multiple times now where people really close to me have had a child die or even rent, like I've had two different customers where they've ran over their own children farming in accidents and like. Most people just either say the wrong thing or avoid it. Totally.

Because they just do. It's so. It's so tragic and there's nothing that you can say obviously, like there's nothing right to say. And then people just, and I always alluded in a way, lesser version of that. It's just with us not being able to have children, like people just said really dumb things. 'cause they just want it to be, they don't, they don't know.

They don't wanna sit in the awkwardness of. Hey, that really sucks. I'm sorry. Right. And people don't like people. People spend most of their life just trying to be comfortable and happy in our North American culture. Yeah. Escape, escape, escape, escape. And they do it through like really good things and really awful things.

Right. And I do too. So I mean, I, I just think for a guy to be really honest in church, like how does that start? And it's a beautiful thing when it does and it [00:15:00] ultimately leads to freedom and healing and, and, and probably salvation. But it's like, how does that. You have to take the first step of admitting and that that's hard.

Right. Especially when everyone around you one looks like they have it together. Yeah. Everyone else like admit there's a problem. Yeah. And ironically, and it would, it's almost the same in every church. The people that are the leaders, and of course some of them are doing a lot better maybe, but they always are the most, they're looking.

The most healthy and they're looking quote unquote

Kyle: perfect.

Gary: Perf perfect, right? Yeah. And so it's like, oh, is that the guy? Am I gonna go to that elder or that guy and say, Hey, I'm struggling with this. And like,

Kyle: yeah, I went to you 'cause you're an alcoholic.

Gary: Yeah. And a lot of other issues too. And it was really cool at Freedom Sessions the other night when a guy spoke, shared his story and it was a beautiful story of his brokenness.

And then like. He had reached out to a pastor and he had been honest with that pastor and he shared about the unconditional love and the pastor had Yeah, yeah. How you treated him and it was like, wow. Like that is, that is literally what the church is supposed to be, and we're supposed to be that to each other too.

That was actually an interesting point in the sermon. I don't know if you were on Sunday morning if you're at church, but they talked about like [00:16:00] s ministering and about serving in church and our, our as Christians, how we should be serving. Not for the church's sake, but for our own sake. And it was just, it was interesting how we always kind of look at like the minister And He's the minister.

Yeah. Yeah. Like no Christians are supposed to all be minister. Yeah.

Kyle: The point, the point of a pastor in the church is to equip the saints for ministry. It literally says that verbatim in the Bible, like you're equipping the Christians. To minister to the people around them. That's how, no, nobody looks at it that way in church.

They all kind few preach that and then go home. Right? Yeah. I mean, it was a, I think it was a question even in the, in our EGMA while back of saying like, Hey, why don't we do house visitation? Why aren't the elders visiting? And I think the elder that answered we're really Dutch, but we're not, we're not that, that you have a great answer.

No, we might, I mean, it's, it's, you have a great answer though, of saying like, no, like the, the point is, is that. The church keeps themselves accountable. And like if, if, if you go to your friend that's, you know, that, you know that's living in sin. You go there 1 0 1 and then to the friend, and then you go to church leadership, it's like the church.

It's not a police situation. This isn't like a a,

Gary: we would try to follow the Matthew 18 principle, right? Yeah. But there [00:17:00] again, people don't. As much as people don't want to confess their own sins, nobody else wants to call anyone else on anything either. No. Either A, because they feel like a hypocrite.

'cause they know they have their own secret sin, or B, they would just rather gossip about it and talk to other people about people's shortcoming. Right.

Kyle: It was interesting. I was watching a, an uh, q and a with John MacArthur and John Piper, um, this week, um, that they had recently. Okay. Yeah. And, and so the John Piper gets, gets said something along the lines of that he got told that you as a pastor, you can't have friends in your own church, uh, because it's like they're too close to you or whatever.

And, um, John MacArthur's dad, who was also a pastor, told him the same thing, like, don't have friends in your own church. But they both really pushed against that idea. They're like, no, that's not true. That's the one place you should be known, especially as a leader. And so, uh, John Viper said like when he had marriage issues.

All of the staff knew and he's like, like, interesting. I don't need to hide this. Like this is, this is the whole point of it. And like he actually lived that and, and by as, by action, by example, not just

Gary: pretty hard to do. Pretty hard to do. Yeah.

Kyle: Well, you really have to hold [00:18:00] onto your identity being in Christ and that you're forgiven, right?

Because as soon as you let that go and that your identity isn't like you have your crap together. Then yeah, you're gonna be wanting to hide. Um, I think it's really the more we believe the gospel and the more we believe that we're fully forgiven, deeply loved by what Jesus did, the easier it is to be open.

And yeah, it just moves, moves in with that

Gary: show

Kyle: notes. No,

Gary: you're really right. You're really gone. You're going strong.

Kyle: Um, what is the difference between faith driven

Gary: risk and reckless risk? Don't have an answer to that. That's complicated. Nobody has the answer to that. How do you, how would you know that?

Kyle: Well, uh, are you praying about it? If you're not praying about it and you're just taking risks? That's, um, not faith driven risk. Right. So if you're just like, if you're buying like a mechanic shop and, and do and not praying about it, like, sorry.

Gary: That's fine. I can handle it. It's just, 'cause we talked about it before.

Well that's fair. [00:19:00] But I think that's low hanging fruit. But still.

Kyle: I'm gonna get it back now.

Gary: No, no, no. It's totally, totally fair. Definitely not enough prayer into that one. I think there is a resistance to, uh, usually we find ourselves i's not even seem more complicated than that. Even if it's not a risk.

Like even if it's not a big thing, like maybe it's a little thing and there's no risk. Like, are we praying about it or are we, like, I think it's way more like, are we actually seeking God's will in our day-to-day life? Right. And it was, it's interesting, one of the things that Ken says in Freedom Sessions, he see, he makes kind of a, a comment like, oh.

How come we don't thank God? Like when our day goes well, or how come, I mean, sometimes we do, but you know, how come we don't just thank him that we got the job? Like we pray that we get the job, and then like, how come we don't? And it's like his, his answer to that is, Hey. Because if our life is going okay, then we say to God, we got this right.

And like, I can really identify with that where it's like embarrassed to admit, but like often it's just, boy, when I finally get in a jam or I get on my knees, right? And it's embarrassing, but it's like, I, I, I think that's pretty prevalent in in our culture, [00:20:00] right? In our Christian culture where it's like, well I think,

Kyle: I think God disciplines, those he loves and I think.

Awesome. I get disciplined for sure. Often the discipline is those hardships that drive us back to our knees. Um, that are, it makes me think of Ken's story in freedom session where he shares that he got diagnosed, he got really sick, and he thought he had cancer, that he was gonna die. And he's like, what's my purpose?

And he thought his purpose was like, I need to die. Well, whatever. And show his kids how, how to, how to die. Well show his kids how to die well, and then all of a sudden he like. Second later realized, well what if, or he found out he wasn't sick or something. I can't remember. No, he just

Gary: said,

Kyle: what

Gary: if

Kyle: God just told him, Hey, what about if I live?

Yeah. Well then what? Yeah. And does he need God for that? 'cause it seemed like he could live without God, but like dying. That needed, he needed God for. And it just shows our reliance on self instead of relying on him, which is, yeah, it goes against our mm-hmm. Our pride. Right. We, we want to have it all together.

Okay. Moving on to, uh, book report. Or do you wanna go through these? Uh, big long, no, let's do the book report first. Yeah. [00:21:00] So for those that listen weekly, uh, know this. But yeah, we go through this book, gentle and Lowly, the Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers, uh, around chapter 13, one chapter a week, uh, chapter titles Why the Spirit with the verse underneath, I'll ask the Father and he will give you another helper, and it talks about how, um, what the, what does the Holy Spirit actually do?

Which just regenerates us, convicts us, empowers us with gifts, testifies in our hearts. There we are. God's children, leads us, make us, makes us fruitful. Um, grants s nurtures us in resurrection Life enables us to kill. Sin guides us into truth more than that. Um, but the, what he wanted to focus was on was that the spirit causes us to actually feel Christ's heart for us.

Um, but it was interesting just reading about the Holy Spirit, which is not something I. Uh, thought a lot of until, uh, free obsession again, where it, it talks about, um, the Holy Spirit and how he, for the Bible teaches a fact is [00:22:00] inside every believer, regardless if you feel it or not, if you're a Christian, if you're born again, holy spirit's inside of you.

Uh, what did you think of that? The chapter?

Gary: Yeah, I think so. It honestly, I I, I cruise through it pretty quickly to be, to be really transparent. Yeah. But it made me think of something, 'cause I was listening and I'm gonna, I've had other people tell me that they don't listen to podcasts anymore, but I have recommended other podcasts that they listen to.

So they're thankful for that. Um, so I'll, I'm gonna give a plug to a podcast here in a specific episode Now, there's lots of good episodes. Um, but this is Paul Tripp. I dunno if you follow Paul Tripp at all. But Marie and I have done marriage, uh, uh, classes with, with him that we've read. We've led marriage classes at our church.

Yep. Which I'd like to do again. It's on my list to do, maybe not this year, but maybe this year we'll see marriage mentoring or something. Anyways, Paul Tripp has a great marriage. Uh. Book, um, series if you wanted to do it with a small group, it's called What Did You Expect? So we did that many, many years ago.

Uh, we weren't even married that long. I didn't No clue what we're doing. Still don't. Yeah. Anyways, the, uh, [00:23:00] podcast that he has, Paul Tripp, is called The Connecting Podcast and the episode, which speaks, um. Of this is episode 41 with the guy named Sam Berry, who's an author and he talks about, and I just partway through listening to it, I was listening to it yesterday while I was working, and he just talks about even just that idea of the spirit being in us and keeping us from sin.

And I don't think a lot of Christians live that way. I think a lot of people live in a defeated spirit. They're constantly just saying, oh, I slipped, I struggled. And I mean, there is some of that. And I mean, he talks about it in the book here. He actually wraps up the very end of the chapter, um, saying that, um.

Did you just read it? No. Okay. Okay. Sometimes I read right after you read. That's really embarrassing. Um, but the spirit's role in summary is to turn our postcard apprehension of Christ great longing. Affection for us into an experience of sitting on the beach in a lawn chair, drinking hand, enjoying the actual experience.

The Spirit does this decisively once and for all at regeneration, but he does it 10,000 times thereafter as we continue through sin folly or [00:24:00] boredom to drift from the felt experience of his heart. And, uh, so anyways, I,

Kyle: it makes it real. I make it like it turns into Yeah. And it's really

Gary: hard to, I think we live in, or our culture, or my culture has been so much of, like, even now, it's like reading knowledge, you know?

Uh, but feeling like feelings are wrong or feelings can be deceptive and they can be for sure. I mean, we feel all kinds of things that may not be real, but like, you know, Jesus had feelings. Jesus felt Jesus wept. And I think that's the beauty of this book is kind of. But learning about the heart of Christ.

Right? And we just don't live that way. Prac or I don't live that way practically. Right? It's just like facts, facts, facts. Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge. And there again, you don't want one without the other. But it's so funny how we tend to grab, gravitate towards one side of the road and then end up in the ditch, right?

And so I just wanted to put a plug for this podcast. Once again, it's connect because it talks about the Holy Spirit in it talks about even just this idea being empowered in the spirit. And um, and, and about. Exactly everything that we've talked about on this podcast today in a, in a, in a great way. So I think people would probably appreciate it.[00:25:00]

He has other great podcasts too. He has Paul Tripp. I didn't know this, but Marie and I flew to on a holiday a few, a few months ago. And, um, he does like a, a three, four hour podcast with a guy that, um, was very, very wealthy, went to Paul Trips church, was totally struggling in his marriage. Ended up meeting with Paul, ended up selling everything he had basically, it sounds like, and started Paul Trip Ministries funded the whole thing.

Kyle: Oh, wow.

Gary: Pretty cool story. Like, and there again, Paul trips very well known in the Christian community, uh,

Kyle: in North

Gary: America, and, and I think well respected and

Kyle: yeah.

Gary: So just, uh, theologically. Probably pretty sound anyways. Pretty interesting how,

Kyle: yeah,

Gary: that's what stuck out to me. I don't have anything else from the chapter.

Sorry.

Kyle: Yeah, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't have a lot of, but it didn't strike me as much as the week before. No, but I think it does. Um, uh, yeah, I mean if it, it's, he's just as a spirit is just as equal to, uh, God the father and. And, and God, the son. Right? But we don't often think about it that way. It's kinda like a footnote almost in our, in our minds.

Uh, but he [00:26:00] is, um, like when Jesus, um, left Earth, he promised he would, um, come, um, in, in another way, in this closer, I think the Bible text says than he was comfort.

Gary: Yeah.

Kyle: Um, and so that is. Literally, um, what every believer has and, and that that comfort and if we have no knowledge of it or resist it or like don't talk about it, like we're not gonna be able to experience the comfort of it.

Uh, but he is, he is with us. Like it's wild to think that my spirit right now has the Holy Spirit. Uh, there and that yours does and, um, should be convicting and it should be comforting, right? Yeah. So no, especially, 'cause you know, he goes with us everywhere where everywhere we go, whatever we see, whatever.

Do it. Think about it. Yeah. Yeah. That's right.

Which, that's really confusing to everyone that thinks we kibo overtime.

Kyle: yeah, we'll keep, I'll keep dropping overtime episodes here and there. Okay. Sorry, I didn't know people are still,

Gary: uh, still, uh, subscribe, staying on the subscriber thing. So give him, uh, we can, yeah, anybody

Kyle: that still wants to. Okay. So I could

Gary: do a monologue and we could post that in the uh, yeah. Yeah.

'cause sometimes my most brilliant thoughts come when I'm like in the barn or some other weird spot. Right.

Kyle: Well, I wanna do a three hour one with you. And put that in, uh, on the overtime. I don't

Gary: feel like I have enough content. I just don't feel like there's one other thing that I could without, like going into deep story time from years past, we put that phone away to a lockbox and we just sit here, get a catheter out.

'cause I don't think I'll last three hours. Is that overtime cut over time? No.

Kyle: Uh, and, and then just, [00:28:00] just let, let her go. I think, I mean, I know for sure if there was no mics we could talk for three hours. Oh yeah. Yeah, verbal

Gary: diarrhea. And so yeah, so I got that listing. I have two other listings, both priced very sharp.

One, I think I have an accepted offer. I'll know here. Within a few hours. Yeah. Uh, in Sardis. And then my Agassi listing still. So yeah, it's weird, weird, weird, weird. You

Kyle: see anything about Mark Carney going to the, um, meeting with the president today? I just saw. Uh, okay. Memes. on Twitter. I actually, I was quite, I mean, he had a pretty good answer 'cause Donald Trump was saying that like, he just, with him beside him was saying, Hey, like, I still think it's better for Canadians if you guys join us.

Like, your tax is gonna be lower. Oh, set it right to his face. Yeah. Okay. Your tax is gonna be way, way lower. Like, you're not gonna have to pay for the military. Like there's arbitrary line, like, like, let's just like, uh, make it better and, and, um. And he goes, it sounds like he doesn't wanna talk about it, but like he takes two to Tango and then Mark Carney's like, yeah, he goes, not everything's for sale.

The White House isn't for sale, you know, uh, Buckingham Palace isn't for sale and Canada's not for sale. It never will be. And uh, and uh, so I thought it was [00:29:00] like a, it was a pretty decent answer. Now I've seen it all over online on CBC and CTV and it was all over. You know what a great answer Mark Carney gave.

And of course

Gary: the, it is fascinating if you think of, um. Yeah. It's just fascinating how the line makes the difference, right? If you look at, in my world, the farming community, it's like you think of like the farm on the one side of the border, shipping milk for a fraction of the price. Now I'm, yeah, where's Mad Max when we need them?

Right? But like, no, like it's literally an imaginary line. Yeah. Like the Fields Connect, right? Yeah. There's like, you know, sometimes no fence or anything really, and you have on this other side of this line simply because that's where the boundary was drawn. Like it's an entire different economy, right?

Yeah. There's, there's. Yeah. Illegal immigrants back in, you know, like Yeah. And it's fascinating how fascinating how they never ended up here. Like very few. Hmm. So like illegal, oh, aliens from the, like, you know, me, Mexican workers that were working illegally in the US for 20 years, right? Like now there's this fear of like these people getting backed out and getting sent back.

Why would they come to Canada? Why wouldn't [00:30:00] they have like for opportunity? Why would 10? 'cause you're in the states, there's

Kyle: plenty of, plenty of opportunity. Like you're gonna naturally, I mean they

Gary: work cheap there, man. Like for years. I mean it's gone up a lot. And because of the minimum wage laws in Washington state and there again, my only experience is in Washington state 'cause that's kind of where I do business, but like in Oregon a bit.

But yeah, it's just interesting how you think of that line in the sand and how many things change and not just. Farming, like the cost of a pair of shoes or anything, like everything is cheaper in the US and that's the argument I use when people start shooting down milk prices. I'm like, why do we pick on milk?

Like everything is cheaper in the, pretty much everything is cheaper in the us and I would argue that. The minute you go away from the border and you go to, you know, middle of Washington state somewhere, we'll go on holidays in Orville, and it's like you go buy butter in the store there and it's more money than in Costco and AB Oxford.

Kyle: Really?

Gary: Yes. That's a true story. My wife will vouch for that. Okay. I would lie about it, but she wouldn't. So

Kyle: it is also, it's,

Gary: it's crazy. I'm dead serious. So that, that's something that people don't talk about. Yeah. Yeah. Like we get a bad rap, but if you go to like the middle of a state somewhere and it's not near the border.

[00:31:00] Or whatever. Not in urban area. Like the cost of dairy is pretty high, right? Yeah, yeah. Um, anyways, huge dairy sales happening. Very interesting. Like there's probably not a lot of farmers that listen to this, but like in the, in the last three weeks there's been 15,000 cows, which is probably about 15, 20% of all of BC's dairy population, milk cow population has got sold in the last three weeks in Washington state in one area, simply 'cause people are going outta business 'cause it's so bad.

It was so bad here. In BC No, it's so bad In Washington. Oh, these are all farms in eastern Washington that are selling out and they're going where? Where? They're dun dun cows are just getting dispersed. Huge auctions. Okay. Like there was a sale the other day. I think it was like eight or 9,000 cows. It was the biggest auction ever.

Kyle: Okay.

Gary: Yeah. Just why is that? Because they're just bleeding cash. Because? Because of their plant that they built as a co-op. Cost three times what it was supposed to cost. And their check off is like 25% of their milk check is going right to fund the interest payments on this plant. So it's like a production plant to predict?

Yeah.

Kyle: Okay.

Gary: [00:32:00] And it was, it's crappy all the way around because I don't think it's a high value plant. Like it's, you know, in the dairy, people don't understand this about milk that aren't into processing or understand milk, but like the milk that you drink is just one type of milk product. Like milk when it goes to a processor is, is.

You know, it's separated into proteins, it's separated into fat, it's separated into powder. Some of it goes overseas for baby formula, like it's broken down into a million different products or whatever. Yeah,

Kyle: yeah.

Gary: And so this plant was like a, a low end, uh, class four milk plant, or to my knowledge, I mean, I could be mis, I could be saying the wrong thing now, but, so just pretty crappy that they spent that much money on it and now they're just bleeding money.

So, anyways,

Kyle: that's my, okay. One last thing you put to, uh, um. Like to have a sensationalist, send me a sermon on these chapters. Oh, yes. Uh, so there's two, two chapters, Corinthians and Ephesians. What's a sensationalist? Am I saying it right?

Gary: Cessationist. Cessationist. What is that? Somebody that believes, um, it's kind of, and there again, I could say the wrong thing here, so I'm open to correction, but I think it's somebody that believes that the, [00:33:00] um, that the Holy Spirit stopped working the way he did at Pentecost.

Whoa. At Pentecost. Sorry. Just hammered the mic there. Um, and I think that. You know, our church obviously wouldn't take that stance and churches will land all over on the spectrum. But I'm thinking how we grew up, it's like, well, I'm not thinking I know it 'cause I know that people have, you know, um,

Kyle: probably not.

Okay. So this is one Corinthians 14, one through five. Let love be your highest goal, but you should also desire the special abilities to Spirit gives, especially the ability to prophesy for if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will also. You will be talking only to God. Since people won't be able to understand you, you'll be speaking by the power of the spirit, but it will all be mysterious.

But one who prophesies, strengthens others, encourages them and comforts them. The person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but the one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more, I wish you could all prophesy for prophesy is greater than speaking in tongues unless someone interprets that you're saying so [00:34:00] that the whole church will be strengthened.

A lot of this stuff is way above my pay grade.

Gary: Yeah. So where I'm going, where the question I had with that was, it goes on a long time. It's a long chapter. Um, but I guess I struggle, I I've, I've been, had people bring up a verse from the Old Testament under like border, maybe not Levitical Law, but Yeah.

Like, you know, something from the Old Testament. Take that verse as it is and quote it as. Relevant in 2025. And how come we're not following that to the letter of the law yet? We have chapter after chapter and I put another one on there in Ephesians two in the New Testament. And this is like, you know, something like prophecy and all these gifts of the spirit.

Um, I. They make us uncomfortable. We, or we don't agree with them. I'm like, Hey, now we're all of a sudden deciding that this has stopped. I and I, and I know there's, I know there are some verses that speak somewhat to that. Um, it'd be interesting to hear a sermon on that from somebody that's, uh, like say a lot smarter than you and I are, but just kind of, it'd be interesting to know the context of that, the real defense of saying, because it's not just [00:35:00] here, it's like chapter after chapter.

Yeah. Right. You know, the rest of Paul's teaching his, his, you know, all the rest of the verses that we take on, you know, walking a. A moral life and, and not living in sin. And, you know, you know, not having, you know, same sex relationships and all these things, we would all agree that's, you know, that's in the Bible.

And then we take these texts here and we say, no, no. That stopped at Pentecost. And like I say, I'm sure there's, I was just thinking as I was reading that the other day, I'm like, oh man, I'd be curious to know who, uh,

Kyle: I thought more was interesting in that sermon on Sunday about it was, uh, that, that every Christian.

Or every person, I guess, has a, has a gift, uh, that they have that has God given And there's no, like, scales on whose gifts are more important, even though it seems like the minister or whatever the, the, the elder, um, has, you know, they're more important gifts, but that everyone has a gift. And, um, they need to be using it to get in the church, in the church to get back.

What are, how

Gary: are you using your gifts in the church? Yeah.

Kyle: And to, to level the body and not everyone's a, an arm or a leg or, you know, whatever, but like we, [00:36:00] every part is needed. And, um, it made me wonder like, where am I actually giving back to the church? Like, uh, are you serving? Are you serving serving? I do welcome desk.

I don't know if that's serving and I don't know how you define. Giving, like I don't have a specific role. I know I have the, the gift of being able to speak into people and encourage people. Well, your wife does Sunday school.

Gary: You're fully capable of doing Sunday school

Kyle: or, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I don't, does it like, is it specifically like a, uh, a position at the church?

Like I. Advertises or like needs help with? Or is it more than just like, Hey, the body, the church is the body, right? It's not necessarily denomination, it's like are you approach body? I

Gary: think it's both. I think it's both. And I think that if it wouldn't matter where you went to church, there would be people that have a consumer attitude and are just literally there.

You know, just to consume, just to take, yeah, save and non save, like mean, whatever. But obviously in our church it's kinda like your expectation would be that you are saved if you're gonna be teaching Sunday school or you know, you're not gonna be like, there would be this level of, but I think, I think the, the convicting part of the message was people are sitting [00:37:00] there and that it was super interesting how the people that, it's fascinating 'cause I, I would probably put myself in the camp of maybe doing too much sometimes.

And then sometimes, sometimes, well no in church, like you sit there and you hear the sermon I'm thinking. Oh man. Gotta do more. Yeah, yeah. No, like you gotta do less. Yeah. And sometimes there's maybe gonna be a vacuum and I think we had a meeting last night, uh, to do with our school and I'm on a committee there, on the board and like, we're just planning fundraising and stuff.

And it's like, no, we just need to stop and not do it this time. Like, you know, we don't, we don't need to wear this. Like, other people need to realize that. This is, you know, we've been doing this work and like we don't wear it all ourselves. Right. And I think in church that can easily happen too. And then people get a, a martyr victim complex of like, oh, either a, I'm so good 'cause I'm doing so much, or, and then start to be resentful.

Right. At least maybe that's just my heart, but it's easy to look at other people that aren't doing anything. No, it's not about that. We just, in our own conscience, need to be doing what,

Kyle: that's what we're responsible for. We feel called to do.

Gary: And I mean, I pray that that sermon hit home. I, I'm sure it did hit home.

It was a great sermon. Right. It's like,

Kyle: but reminds me [00:38:00] that, that that conversation, that MacArthur. Piper had as well. Um, they both wrote two. There's two books they're really well known for. Uh, John Piper's book Is Desire and God, and Don't Waste Your Life. No. Sarah Goddess, his most well-known Oh, okay. Book.

That's his like first, first book that like really gets to the heart of his whole ministry of Goddess Most glorified in us when we were most satisfied in him. Um, but then John MacArthur has a book as well. Uh, something along those lines, but they both wrote those books because they felt that. The American church had so many unbelievers in it.

They're like, they looked at the church and the church just didn't look like Christians. They, they, they were just full of unbelievers in how they, uh, really pushed that. Which is really interesting because, I mean, I've, I've been told before that I can't listen to Piper 'cause everyone's a believer. You know, X, Y, z it's definitely not the case if you actually listen to him.

Um, he's very aware of the fact that yeah, most people are just checking boxes and they don't actually have an affection for Christ in their heart at all. Um, and just do, go do a bunch of right things so they don't feel guilty 'cause that's how they grew up. Um, but they don't actually [00:39:00] have, you know, that real relationship and have fully repented and trusted and graced.
