I should say it was a rough weekend.

Gary: What's that?

Kyle: Yeah, it was, it was a harder weekend for me. Okay. Um, and I don't dunno if I wanna say why.

Gary: Well,

Kyle: you can be discreet. Um, no, I, I think there, there, there's, there's people in our, in, in my life that I really care about. Yeah. And sometimes they're [00:02:00] doing things that, um, I don't think is helpful for them.

And that's, that's, that's hard to watch. It's hard to watch. Yeah. Uh, and I most people can identify that.

Gary: Yeah. Yeah. And if you don't have anybody like that in your life, you're probably that person in other people's life. Just a heads up. That's a very good note. What about you? Um, good weekend went to Manning Park with the, uh, with the in-laws.

Okay. Uh, so we didn't take our little foster boy with us, but we took our five kids. Yeah. And then, uh, my sister-in-laws, they took their kids. Which is wonderful. And, uh, yeah, my in-laws take us every year and, uh, we, it's a gong show. There's nine kids, 10 and under. And, and are you working all weekend or are you pretty unplugged?

I'm pretty unplugged, yeah. We had a few calls. That's right. And I did have quite a bit going on actually Saturday morning. 'cause I did have a make him note to Marie that I said, I don't think I worked much on Saturdays normally, but this Saturday morning feels pretty hectic not being there, dealing with everything.

But, um, no, it was snow up there, we went sledding and uh, it's a [00:03:00] great place. I mean, honestly, we don't pay for it. It's paid for by my parent, my in-laws, which is awesome. But, um, I don't think it's super expensive. I think it's did you actually relax place? It

Kyle: was like it was good for you. Like with five kids, it's kind of hard to relax.

No. As a parent, yeah.

Gary: I don't think, and I think even if I don't have kids, I think I almost get less relaxed when I'm not around. My kids, like when I get, when I go away just with Marie and I like if we go to like Mexico or something like that. Yeah. I really get a lot of work done. I go into like hyper-focused, like wow, my brain, all the things that I are just crammed out because of the immediate emergency stuff come to my mind.

Kyle: opportunities and. Yeah, so I actually started doing it when I stopped taking like a phone with me on dates and stuff like that, or like, I try to have my phone on me as little as possible and uh, but I'll take a notepad with always a notepad, always I go to, but then Curry, Dave Curry's like, no, don't do that.

Be there, be in the moment. He's like, you on a date with your wife? Don't take your notepad with. Kyle, just be there. You don't always have to write something down. I'm like, oh, come

Gary: on. We went on a date last week. Wednesday, spur the moment. We normally go on date night every Wednesday, [00:04:00] but it's been lacking just 'cause it's been almost every night.

I have something now, but um, last Wednesday we went out and I wrote stuff the whole date, so we had dinner. I wrote think like four different things and then after we were done like eating, we went and took care of all the things. We stopped at like three different people's places. It was awesome. My wife's pretty task oriented too, so I appreciate her.

Okay. Anyways, yeah.

Kyle: Okay, let's get into it real. Reacts. We're gonna watch the reel here and then, uh, talk about it afterwards.

This is the first time I've talked about this publicly. My, my wife, one day I was down in the gym, this is over Christmas, and we have a little gym in our, our basement, and I'm exercising down there and she heard me cheering and I'd gotten a text message.

This was over a holiday break that I'd landed a speaking gig that I really wanted. And the guy who runs all that for me, he had texted in and said, Hey, and I think we got you another one. And I was cheering. So she comes down and says. Whatcha so excited about. And I was like, I got this. And then I got this.

And as she retells this, she said, I literally was watching my husband die in front of me. And then I hear him [00:05:00] cheering that he got more work. Mm. And her, her normal, she withdraws, right? So when she gets upset or gets anxious, her normal move is to just pull back and then we reconvene. And this time she didn't and she stepped forward in a way that kind of caught me off guard.

And I'll never forget this as long as I live. 'cause it was un. Mooring. She said, the pie chart, that is how much I love you. And the pie piece, that is how much money you make is full. Anything that you go get beyond this is not for me and it's not for the kids, it's for your ego. And she said, so from this point forward, go do whatever you wanna do, but do not make the mistake of thinking it's for us.

And then she said, this, John, we have enough. And then she walked out.

Gary: Savage man, and this is a guy that help,

Kyle: like he genuinely helps a lot of people. He's a doctor of some sort. I forgot his name. This is a Christian Guy? Yeah. Yeah. Okay.

Gary: I don't have anything to say. I'm

Kyle: speechless, your Honor. [00:06:00] I thought it was banging on QT as charged.

I thought it was bang on. I was like, how many guys are doing that? Where? Justifying Sam

Gary: doing it for my family.

Kyle: Yeah.

And, and it's actually no, it's just we have enough. We just want, it's, we're doing it for us. We're selfish, and we then put a label of like sacrifice on it or something. Or even with helping other people, stuff like that, because I have, well, that's the worst part. I have it sometimes where I can help somebody.

And I should be spending time with my family and I actually know I should be. Yeah. But because I can

Gary: that that's way more, that's way harder to decipher.

Kyle: Yes.

Gary: Even though the other one is way more common. 'cause most especially in our culture, people are workaholics by nature and they wouldn't define themselves as that.

They would just say they're a hard worker. 'cause they just would not wanna wear the label of being lazy. That's the worst sin in the world, right. Is to be. Considered lazy or, or, or just to hang out? Yeah. Just why would you spend time just being right? Yeah. Because you are [00:07:00] what you produce, right? In our culture to some degree.

Um, the, the interesting thing is the, uh, ministry piece or just caring for others. Um, I. And in our marriage, it's caused a lot of resentment, right? 'cause it's gotten to the point where it's like you care so well for these other people and I'm supposed to be your first love. Right? So that's been the hard conversation.

My goal said to me, she goes like, you're

Kyle: so good at listening to people when you're doing your coaching and everything else like that. Can't listen to me for 30 seconds. You barely listen me. And I'm like. Dang, pay me more woman. Yeah. Here's a stripe link. What's that? Here's a Stripe link. Yeah. Here's a, yeah.

No, I, I thought, I thought it was, I thought it was, yeah, I thought it was really good. Um, and it's fascinating. Good. The other end

Um, we talked about doing a, um, a live listener event Yes. For Christmas. The Christmas special, we'll call it. Yes. Are you gonna put a pull out for that too? Yes. Kyle: for the, I kind of looked into it a little bit.

That was for grade A place though, right? 'cause you wanted to have it be perfect. Well, I want proper audio and proper video. And then it has to hold around how many, every, many people can fit in that place. It's 60 people, so I think we can get about 60 people out. And what, how much money was that place? I think it was gonna be 1500 bucks, because you have to rent it for a minimum of four hours.

Okay. And you can put food. So we can have food afterwards and stuff as well. And we can

Gary: bring our own food

Kyle: in. Yeah.

Gary: Okay. Okay. We could even do a [00:09:00] potluck that way we could be Oh yeah, we had to look up a couple platters. So yeah, it could be, if people are sick of listening to me that they might just poison us.

Kyle: find out and then we'll do a live q and a. That'll be overtime. That would be Okay. So anyways, next segment. Let's get political. Um, well there's, I want to talk about a few different things here. Um. First talk about the, the Trump's statement that he put out yesterday.

25% tariffs Yes. On Mexico and Canada until you get your border under control and, and, uh, your drug problem under control. Did you read it? What'd you think?

Gary: Well, I just feel like, I mean, it's hypocritical obviously to some extent. I mean, their border leaks too. Like it's, he's not in control right now. It won't, no.

Trust me, it will, it'll

Kyle: still leak to a certain guy. It'll be a lot better than it's, it will be, they were pumping people in. Okay. Intentionally. They were flying people in. Okay. To get more votes. Okay. I texted Don Jr. Yeah. Um, Trump, uh, um, Donald Don Jr. And I said, uh, I think it's good that your dad did this.[00:10:00]

He actually put Trudeau to work. Hopefully he does something proper for once. It's,

Gary: it's gonna be horrible for our economy and horrible for our country cop. If

Kyle: it actually does, I don't think it's actually gonna be put in place because it'll, he, he's just blowing smoke. Yeah. I think it's a negotiating tactic and they just

Gary: don't know.

Starting off strong.

Kyle: Yeah. They just don't know what it's

Gary: gonna do. It's, I saying it really, like, I, I buy a lot of US currency and like last night after the announcement and now we're talking, you know, people listening to this 10 days later or eight days later. But it's, yeah. I mean the US dollar like spiked up like a one and a half percent.

Like it affects

Kyle: it's spike, our Canadian college dollar drop

Gary: drop, Canadian dollar dropped. Right. And uh, yeah, it's really. It's really damaging for economy. If there is tariffs like that, think of all the people that are producing goods here that are exporting into, uh, the US now. And the other problem is when you do these, when you have protectionist type policies, like Donald Trump is actually known for that.

And anybody that was cheering him on knew that this type, it may not be this, he may not go through with this, but he'll go through with other things. Yeah. Um, even, even if it's posturing, it will lead to tension and Canada will likely retaliate in some ways, in certain areas. And that in and of [00:11:00] itself, like.

They're called free trade agreements for a reason. They're healthy. Like the more free trade there is between, because you're so close and you're so interconnected and the border's right there, the more trade that you can do freely between the two countries while still protecting your own, you know, business to some extent is, is great.

And so now people that know me would say, well, how come we can't ship milk in to Canada? Right. So that's one of, there's been a lot of, it's fascinating how coinciding with potentially a conservative government that would arguably be more free trade obviously, than our current Yeah. Government in Canada, they push for.

There's a lot of push from, you know, certain, uh, mouthpieces basically to say, Hey, get rid of supply management. Get rid of quota. The fascinating thing is with dairy, first of all, it's interesting chicken farmers never come under attack. Like the dairy guys. Like I dunno if people follow that. It's always the milk guys that get in trouble for supply management, even though all the chicken is

Kyle: And is there like, are

Gary: Americans upset that they can't ship chicken up here as well?

No, they're not even that upset about dairy. Like there's some that are, but people that really understand and I'll be the first to say, and I own. Fair amount of [00:12:00] quota. And I'm, and I, and I'm a believer to some degree in supply management, even though I, I'm definitely more of a free market person than your average probably dairy farmer in Canada.

'cause I have other businesses that are complete capitalist businesses and like social supply management is communist to some extent. Like it totally is. There's when every limiting supply, it's not even the price setting. 'cause the price is, I mean, it's a little higher, but it's not that much higher. And that's what people here don't understand like.

Um, the real issue is, and the people, and this is where I think it gets a little muddy, is the idea that, you know, the license to produce the milk has a lot of value, is not healthy because obviously that cost has to be covered somewhere, right? Yeah. And the reason it has value is 'cause What other business do you get where you're guaranteed a pretty steady price?

Yes. And more importantly than that, the fact that you get paid. Every month guaranteed you can count on your milk check coming like the sun come out. Now. It is the same in the us So even us dairy farmers, even though their margin's crappier and they, you know, it's tougher to be way, tougher to be a dairy farmer in the us, um, they, they still are a bit considered a safe way, safer [00:13:00] business than a lot of other business would be in the us.

So I find that fascinating when I talk to guys there, the, the issue that people so don't, don't,

Kyle: you don't think though that these like, um, protecting his policies that he's gonna put in, um, in some way is gonna. Um, may Canada do the same thing and just help us in our way, like Paul, everyone else. No, I don't

Gary: think it'll be helpful.

Kyle: No, I don't, I don't think

Gary: trade wars are healthy. I think the best thing is what we've, I would feel we've had for the most part, which is a pretty open border and I think that. There again, back to the dairy, and I'm just point touching on that again because like if we had an open border for dairy, let's say, which is what, you know, Wisconsin dairy farmers would like, they would take care of all the Southern Ontario people where all the millions of people are, and they'd look after really well, the lower mainland.

'cause you know, they have piles of milk close by, but everybody in the northern part of Canada would just pay an egregious amount or they wouldn't even get, like, it would just be, it's not that simple, right? Yeah. So anyways, um, and it is tough just geographically how, I mean, how, how our country is, and it's why.

Like, I love cheap stuff too, and I want a cheap [00:14:00] phone bill. And people say all these things, oh, this should all be cheaper. Like you can't compare to the same size country that has 10 times the amount of people, like, you just can't, it's gonna cost more here. Yeah. Everything costs more. Not just milk, not eggs, not like grow, like everything is Yeah.

I mean, what

Kyle: like, I mean, Paul F came, um, came out today and said Canada first. Canada first. It was so funny hearing him say that. 'cause it was like Trump saying America first. Uh, um, but. Um, he's pandering a bit, right? Yeah. I mean, and it's working, but he, he just said like, Hey, let's get rid of these, the carbon tax and all these other taxes and stuff like that, so that that'll actually reduce the prices of things in Canada.

Gary: It will reduce the price and it will really spur on economic growth. And I think that's the part where people that are not entrepreneurs don't understand is that they would just think, Hey, businesses make a lot of money, tax them, but businesses literally hire people. They, yes, they, they like being pro business is good for a country and a lot of people don't understand that, right?

So. Okay. Especially my mom. She's a socialist. Eh,

Kyle: I did not know that. But Gary's, I'm a socialist, so call her. Can, can the show. Yeah.

Gary: She, she should be allowed to defend herself.

Kyle: Um, I've seen this week that Pat King, who was part of the Freedom Convoy, um, he got, [00:15:00] uh, charged with a whole bunch of stuff. And so, uh, he got convicted.

Convicted and apparently might get up 10 years in jail. Is this the Coutts guy or is this Uh, no, I think this is the Ottawa guy. The Ktz guy, actually, someone mentioned to me, I think he's from the Dutch reform community in southern Alberta to have him on the podcast, but I like to have him on. But these guys are getting slammed with like prison sentences.

I thought a lot of their stuff's getting dropped. He had a, he had a bunch that got dropped, but a bunch that, that, that stuck. And there was like that lady that went to jail too. Tamara. Tamara, yeah. Um, I think, I just think it's insane. Like it's so infuriating to me when like pedophiles, you know, don't get any jail time at all.

Or like, you know, these other guys go, nothing happens. Or there's Palestinian writing and Montreal writing in Montreal. That's bizarre. And, and uh, I mean everyone was giving Trudeau crap 'cause he was at a Taylor Swift concert, which I'm like, whatever. You shouldn't be there in the

Gary: first place. I

Kyle: think he was there with this kid or whatever else like that.

Can't Stan Taylor Swift. Yeah. Um, that's a whole nother thing, but it, it's like, yeah, he doesn't, you know, no comments about that. You know, [00:16:00] he did tweet out the next day, but, you know, this freedom convoy thing, they were trying to steal people's money genuinely. Like, they, like froze people's accounts. Trust me.

Your, your money too.

Gary: Yeah. And I, um, made a donation on behalf of one of my businesses Yeah. And was getting like emails from like the Washington Post and all these things inquiring about it. Like it was just bizarre times. Bizarre times.

Kyle: I, I can't stand Trudeau. Like I know you're supposed to respect your like leaders and stuff like that.

Hey, do you want me to read you a funny thing that I got from a local newspaper? Yes.

Gary: What do you got before we go to personal playlist? It's just, this just shows you how polarizing of a time, and I mean, this is gonna give a lot of people PTSD or bring back fun memories depending on what your views are.

Um, but it's just very interesting.

Kyle: It's, it's, uh, this reminds me of, uh, there was a guy, a local newspaper, um, uh, editor here. I forgot his first name. He, Paul, his name was, um, Paul Henderson. He got, uh, I think he got fired a couple years ago, but I, [00:17:00] he was always. Like super liberal and anti-conservative in his articles.

So I sent him an email and I invited him over to my house for dinner. Mm-hmm. I sent him a letter and over and just to have a conversation with him. 'cause I just like, I want to talk to these people on the other side. And he took a picture of it and posted it on Facebook and said like, is this guy gonna like, bring me to his house and then like, put me in his basement and time me to a ball and chain and, and, uh, yeah.

Gary: Byers. I'll try you via email as well, but I message you here to ask for your comment on your blank donation to the anti-vaccine mandate convoy. Can you explain why you donated so much money? By far the most of anyone locally to what seems like a domestic terrorism to some people.

Are you at all concerned about the fact that the overt plan of the organizers to this protest, to whom you gave the money, is to overthrow democratically [00:18:00] elected government?

Kyle: So anyway, it's a really catchy song. IIII, I love, I love the, the genre. But some, these, I'll read some of the words here. Um, I just wanna love somebody who won't leave a hole in my heart. I just wanna love somebody that don't want me falling apart. Uh, I want to find something stronger than whiskey. Oh, I've tried and every time I feel her, her kiss, I keep coming up empty, even when she's up against me.

I don't know why. It feels like there's nobody with me and I'm still empty. I just wanna love somebody that won't leave a hole in my heart. I was listening to a song and I was just like, this is the epitome of. Life without Jesus, it's, we are constantly looking for something to fill this hole in our heart.

And I love this the line he says, even when she's up against me, I don't know why. It feels like there's nobody with me. I'm still empty. And I'm like, I. No matter what it is, if it's, uh, work or [00:20:00] relationships or kids or any of the things like that, you're always, we're always wanting more. We're like, we're empty.

It's like the ring in Lord of the Rings. It's just like in Lord of the Rings. Never watched it. No, I watched it for the first time like four months ago. It's actually good. Yeah. But there's this ring which symbolizes, um, evil and every time they look at it, it just like pulls 'em in. It's super powerful. And who's the lord of the Rings?

Um, I don't know. It's the, that's the name of the movie. Yeah, I know. Isn't there a Lord of the Rings? I think that's, uh, I don't know. I dunno the answer to that question. I don't know. My Lord, the rings well enough. It's like, I think Gary's starting to smoke weed lately. Anyways, I told yeah, I just, I was, I was listening to this and I was like, it's just that pit.

It's, yeah. That, that only Jesus actually fills you the void that is and, and makes you not feel empty. And like I've. Done all the things or many of the things and been left very empty and have been left just more empty. You just, you just leave more empty and then it pulls you in more and then you're more [00:21:00] empty.

And it's just like this cycle and, and uh, just to hear this super famous, uh, Morgan Mullen, I think's pretty famous. He is, yeah. Um, he does have c artists, I would agree. Uh, singing that. And I was just like, man,

Gary: is he not a Christian?

Kyle: I don't know. Um, from most of his music doesn't seem like that's his, uh, cup of tea, but

Gary: I wrote the book.

Kyle: I wrote the book. Okay. Yeah. What do you think of that, those lyrics? You can, can you, uh, testify to the same thing?

Gary: Yeah, I can testify, I can testify that I pursued everything on this earth that I've thought of, and it all came out pretty short.

Pretty disappointing. It's also interesting, it's back to our original conversation, that a lot of things that are really good still leave you empty too.

Kyle: Yeah. And the things that are really good, if you can, when Jesus is first. And you're living that way. 'cause I think as a Christian sometimes you don't live that way, or No, I, I don't.

No, I often don't. Um, but then you can enjoy the other things a lot more. You can actually enjoy those gifts [00:22:00] when they're in like second and third place, not in first place. Then you can actually, you know, and, and, uh, and it's way more full and, and enjoyable. 'cause there is like, God does want us to have a full life, but he wants to be first.

Gary: I had lunch with a guy, uh, yesterday and he's challenged me lots of times. Great guy, good friend. And he said, uh. Well, he just, he got really hurt one time and almost died. Um, and he's also had tragic death in his family. And he al he said to me like, you could drop dead, Gary. And that's fine. Like everything will carry on.

Like the ministries that you're a part of will carry on. If they're supposed to, the family will survive. Yes, there'll be sadness, but like you, so you need to be living and asking God, what are you supposed to be doing with your time's? Basically his best trait. That's, that's what I got out of it. And it was super convicting because.

Often, I mean, similar to that guy that talked to your little clip in the beginning. It's like I'm always justifying, right? I'm always having an answer for everything. And you're good at it, Touche. I mean, it's kinda like [00:23:00] fair enough, but no, it's, yes.

Kyle: You know what I'm trying to say. I'm in that you're in that spot where you're doing good things.

So does that conversation actually make you change something or do you feel convicted and just keep going? Um,

Gary: or what is it like? No, I will take action from the conversation. I mean, I'm a very slow learner and I learn everything the hard way, unfortunately. Thanks. God is really patient gracious. He's very patient and people.

My wife is very patient. No, but I mean, I'm, and I have, I'm, I've taken huge steps from where I am, but it's funny how a lot of ways I've just veered from a lot of bad habits to a lot of good things, and it's like, okay, you're still running around like a decapitated chicken, right? It's like, well, like even if

Gary: they're out there.

And so today's, um, sin is, uh, [00:24:00] sloth, uh, or laziness. Um, maybe sloth is a better word for it, but I'll read, um, a few of the quotes from the book here.

Sloth is not a pretty picture with soul decaying apathy and carelessness towards others. Sloth rightly takes its place among the seven deadly sins. It looks like simple laziness, but sloth is a complex sin expressed in three persons. The sluggard, the workaholic, and that's the most interesting one for me.

And the zombie. How'd you enjoy this, uh, week's reading.

Gary: Yeah, I found that, I mean that part fascinating. Fascinating about, um, and this was a verse that was quoted a lot when we were kids. Go to the aunt now. Sluggard.

Kyle: Yeah.

Gary: Um, Proverbs was work something, work harder. Um, I mean it's in my childhood and it's fascinating 'cause my kids' perspective would be like, I've said this I think on the podcast here, that.

I work too much. That was never talked about when I [00:25:00] was a kid, and anybody that I looked up to was definitely in hindsight or would classify as we're called. Great guys, some of them great guys, but

Kyle: yeah. Um, so, okay, so I'm, I'm gonna read a little piece of each one of those. I'll start with the Sluggard.

Yeah. The Sluggard is a cancer and the local church and the slugger should be warned and treated as an appropriate threat. God is concerned that we live diligently, not idly with our finances, vocations, and time. And then it, uh, quotes a, a, a Bible verse here from, um, uh, two Thessalonians. Um, and now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the Lord, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don't follow the tradition they perceive from us. Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people's business. We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ has settled down and work.

To earn their own living. Take note that tho of those who refuse to obey what we say in this letter, stay away from them [00:26:00] so they'll, so they will be ashamed, which I always find very interesting when there's that clear of a command to stay away from people that are like living in sin in a certain way.

Specifically it's Christians, not non-Christians, it's Christians that are living in that industry for other Christians to stay away from them. Okay. That's an important distinction. Yes. Very important. So that's the description of the, um, the sluggard, which I thought was just pretty straightforward. But then the workaholic, um, I thought was the one that really, like I'd read this chapter before a couple years ago, but I completely forgot that, you know, sloth or laziness can fall under, workaholic, can fall underneath that.

So I'll read this quote. Workaholism is A is slothful because it uses labor in a self-centered way to focus on personal advancement or accumulated accolades. In God's economy, work is not a showcase for self, but a means for supporting others. I think that's just like, I'm gonna read that line again. In God's economy, work is not a showcase for self, but a means for supporting [00:27:00] others.

I think that's really important to think about, like why we're working, why are we doing it? Is it for our own own gain or is it for in God's economy to like help others? I'll keep reading here that quote vocation. Is love intent on meeting others' needs. The workaholic who works himself ragged to prove himself superior to his neighbor or to have more stuff than his neighbor is playing the sloth just as much as the man who stalls his vocation by wasting his life on an Xbox bang Ecclesiastes, four people walks a

Gary: podcaster playing Xbox.

Do you think there's any gamers watching this? Oh, there's gotta be some. Yeah, I think there's some. Do a poll. Do a poll. Do a pull man's. A lot of pull going. A poll. No, I love the

Kyle: polls. The sluggard and the workaholic both express self-centeredness. They both live out a desire to control their own lives, neither lives to love, neither lives to worship.

This desire to control life is a craving for selfish comfort and it rots the soul. The workaholic is likewise driven by desires. And then I'll quote uh, a, a [00:28:00] Bible verse in the Bible here, mark 4 18, 19, and others are the ones sewn among thorns. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word and it proves unfruitful.

And that is just, I think, a devastating verse in, in a lot of ways because it's just like you can see sometimes what you're missing out on. Or running away from when you're, you know, always working and chasing for more and more and say, yeah, but I have to, like, I can't. And, you know, just making excuses for it.

Um, but that's what kills the word, you know, if you're always working and exhausted, you don't have capacity to read your, your Bible at night or to love other people or to lead your family well, or to spend time in prayer or like any of those things that actually really matter. Um, and it's just, yeah, it's really easy to do.

Mm-hmm. And, uh. Just, yeah. Very convicting as you read that. I'll, I'll, I'll, uh, do the last, uh, one here in a [00:29:00] sec. The zombie, but the workaholic. Talk to me about that. Like what do you as you hear that, I mean, I was

Gary: surprised by that. I find the zombie the most interesting.

Kyle: Okay. Why?

Gary: Uh, because I think most people in our culture find, fall into that camp.

Kyle: Okay. Okay, so read the zombie then. The zombie is not driven by nothing, but it has lost the desire to love and lost the the taste for what is truly satisfying. His eyes are glazed over on Sunday when it comes to matters of first importance, the frozen zombie-like stares among many Sunday congregants in a sort of evidence of despair.

We live in an age of distraction of massive attention deficit disorder, failing to have our attention grabbed by anything of lasting value. Our eyes, our minds, wander relentlessly roving. Failing to alight on anything worth having. The zombie has grown. Doll of hearing, driven by dead eye. Desire for something the world offers impinged by daily life and the needs of others manifested by habitual addiction to distraction.

This is the Es essence of the [00:30:00] zombies. Zombies, sloth. So why do you think was that? That was the most interesting. I mean, that was a lot to take in there, but that was a lot. Um, that was wordy. Yeah, it is very wordy there. Actually, I was trying to figure out a way to, did you read the, Richard, did you just read

Gary: the Richard New High quote?

Yeah, but read it again. Yeah, go ahead. I. Defines modern sloth as quote evenings without number obliterated by television evenings. Neither of entertainment nor of education, but of narcotic defense against time and duty above all else. He writes. Sloth is, sloth is apathy. The refusal to engage the pathos of other lives and of God's life with them.

And so I guess it just stands out to me. Or Yeah, just a lot of people are just not engaged. Like, and I think that it's, it's of course ironic because of social media, right? So, you know, we've grown up kind of in this culture, like in our late [00:31:00] teens, early twenties, into adulthood now, where it's like, okay, there's this whole world mm-hmm.

Where everything is instantly posted and instantly there and people are seeing everybody's stuff, but nobody's really engaged. Yeah. And people long for real relationship. That's something we've known. I mean, you and I do it. We do it every day. You know, so we're not in that camp per se, but it's still, even for me, it's like, it's very easy just to like waste an hour on Twitter, waste an hour on Facebook or Instagram just useless, like useless.

Just like so where people, I think people really deep down, long for deep connection and want to be cared for and want to do relationship. But it doesn't happen because like things like Netflix, like. Cancel your Netflix account. Like just cancel or buy

Kyle: a lockbox? No, just cancel

Gary: Netflix. Like, just yeah,

Kyle: do, do that as well.

But like, vote with your wallet. We're, we're, we're not strong enough. These are literal addictions.

Gary: Oh, they totally

Kyle: are. And, and it's, we're not necessarily strong enough to just say no when it's like seven 30 at night and the kids are in bed and not to grab your phone or not to turn on tv. Is it wrong to watch a show?

No. Maybe not. But [00:32:00] like,

Gary: is it wrong to watch shows four nights a week for two, three hours in a shot? Well, what is that really the best use of your time? No.

Kyle: Everyone knows the answer to that.

Gary: No, they don't.

Kyle: No, they don't. They think that's solely okay. Yeah. Otherwise they wouldn't do it. No. I think they don't even consider thinking about it.

I think if they actually thought about it, they would say, yeah, that's actually not good. I should do something else. Take action. Yeah, I have it so my phone is locked up, but I'd be curious to do pull about that too. Fricking pull, man. Much know I love it. See how many people watch stuff. You'd be surprised.

Yeah, well, yeah. I mean, it's stat show for it, but what I do, I have a buddy that has a password to my phone and so my social media set it to maximum 50 minutes a day. That's awesome. If my apps turn offs, awesome. Use my lockbox a lot on the weekends or in the evenings and stuff like that, and it's not because I'm a better person and stuff like that, I'm just like.

I hate it's 'cause

Gary: you're a work person, but you're just aware of it.

Kyle: I just hate what it

Gary: does. It steals my time. That's all I feel. That's, I mean, I just feel I'm not qualified to be hanging out on social media.

Kyle: It's just not healthy. Get in trouble in a real hurry. Yeah, I just flee. I noticed that actually with the kids, they're like pretty happy after supper and stuff like that.

[00:33:00] And I'm like, okay, let's watch videos for 25 minutes. So we watched videos 25 minutes. So we watched, um, um, like YouTube. YouTube and stuff like that, and then we turn it off and they're fricking little animals. Yes. They're pissed. They're totally pissed off. They just got a hit of cocaine, like they just snorted and they're like, my kids too.

They all scream at me. Yeah. All these beautiful children. Yeah. You know what's old man? Our bodies tell us what's good for us. If I go play hockey for 25 minutes with the boys, they come inside. They're happy. They're vibrant. Yeah. Okay. Interesting. Okay, so I just wanna close off this, this, uh, part of the, um, the book with our response, our response to it.

Like, how do we deal with these things, sloth. And so the, the book says sloth versus leisure. So I'm gonna quote again. I. By poking a stick at these three kinds of sloth, we can wake up and shake off these tendencies in our own lives. The great paradox is that the slugger who idolizes his free time, the workaholic who seeks self-constructed self-worth, and the zombie who sleep walks through life have all lost the capacity for true leisure.[00:34:00]

I love this. Because I think it's this, the same quote. There's a quote from um, CS Lewis about saying that we are not, um, we're too easily satisfied with, uh, mud puddles when there's an ocean of grace offered to us that God is so much better. Like these things actually don't get us anything. The slugger defends his comforts and grows blind to the beauty of God.

The workaholic clutches his salary, his power, and his image, and loses the leisure he needs to. Flourished as a creature before God. The zombie sees life as a series of compounded distractions, gets buried in the details, feeds off candies of diversion, and slowly dozes off into a spiritual coma. True leisure and true joy in God has escaped them all.

They are lazy soul, and as Thomas Madison says, everlasting Joys will not drop into the mouth of a lazy soul. These things are not tris. They will cost us to diligence. Diligence and seriousness. All three forms of sloth are boredom with God and doomed to death. Sloth kills like all sin, [00:35:00] it kills, but sloth kills.

And so yeah, it was convicting for me to read as well, just to, you know, our time to be, you know, intentional with it.

Gary: I found, uh, and now it's coming back to me 'cause I read this and then I. Had a meeting with somebody about just the value of church. Oh, we beat, we beat our record. Okay. We're not New York then.

Um, uh, the, uh, the value church people get Yeah. People get very disenfranchised as church. A lot of people I meet with our church or hurt from church, even if they continue pastor Mask come around church talking about church hurt. Okay. We keep going anyways. And, um, yeah, we see a lot of that, and I'm sure every church does, but for sure our church has a lot of people coming from other churches that are very hurt, where this whole community that they, you know, obviously that was the people that were supposed to be caring for them.

I mean, I'm sure, I know we've hurt people at our church too. Um, but yeah, it's, it's fascinating to see how wounded people come, but this book really talks about, um, in this, [00:36:00] in this chapter. Talks about just the importance of being in that church community and what God calls us to, right? Um, and he talks even about like, you know, you talk about work holism, but he says God here.

He says, uh, our routine before the world, and just the example that we are in our work, right? And God really cares about our nine to five. He wants us to show up to work on time, to work full days, and to keep our homes in order, our daily routines and the maintenance of our houses are visible to others. A quiet, faithful life making a bold testimony to God's worth.

And it's fascinating because somebody today I had another, mm-hmm. Meeting with someone today and they said they were talking with their buddies and they were asking each other like, do people ever ask us why we're different? Like if we're living just in the world with people that are not Christians.

Yeah. They should, we should be somewhat noticeably different. Yes. Over time. Yes. To some varying degrees, right? Yes. And uh, so I think that's, to me,

Kyle: that's a challenge for myself. And uh, and I think it's also the lie that the simple life is, is like not exciting or not boring. Like I've lived more simply than I ever have [00:37:00] and it is.

Like more enjoyable. It genuinely is better than flying around the world, making sick money and, you know, meeting kinds, all kinds of cool people and gonna cool places. Uh, it like, you know, even if you're not doing that, but you know, just enjoy your wife, enjoy your kids. Like, put effort into your marriage.

Like, I think over the last, I did the math the other day, Nicole thought it was more, but I think I spent like 150 grand the last three years on coaching and counseling and marriage conferences and things like that. Like a sick amount of money. But it's paid off. Like if you want your life to get better, like put your money to things that actually matter.

Yeah. I'm gonna carry on

Gary: this's back to the church again. The Slothful Slugger. This is for the people that are in their church that are not serving in their church and not plugged in and just floating along. Okay. I think that's me. You probably could serve in some area. You have a lot of gifts, so I would expect you to be very busy.

At church. The Slothful Slugger is confronted by by calling for diligence. In daily routines, the [00:38:00] slothful workaholic is confronted by an investment in love for other Christians in the church. The slothful zombie is confronted by the true enchantment with God to awaken to the glory of union with Christ and the cosmic size work of God and the gospel.

In a sense, the most relevant confrontation with sloth is found in the local church. The gates of sloth shall not overcome her. Our church gatherings themselves are part of the glorious routine. If done right in community, we gather to celebrate the sloth finds his true leisure. So it's just fascinating that, you know, it says the local, it ends the very end of the chapter.

It says the local church is a hard sell for the slothful, but what makes it a hard sell is also makes it good medicine for the slugger, the workaholic, and the zombie. Yes. So, yes.

Kyle: Anyways, great chapter and, uh, and it was a little felt, I do, I do have to give some gripe to Tony Ranke. He wrote this chapter here for absolutely using terrible words that the laymans like me have a hard time understanding simple folk [00:39:00] like, right, he should know this.

I think. I think, uh. I think where's he from? Tony Rank. He works for Desire and God, actually I'm on my podcast. Um, and, uh, he wrote the, he's written a bunch of books, but he writes a lot about technology. Um, and seven ways your 10 Ways your iPhone is changing you or something like else like that. Your phone is changing you.

Gary: guy from California. No, he love the guy that Matt had on the podcast. Matt had a great guy on his podcast talking about tech wise. It was, no, this is a couple years ago. I had this guy on.

Kyle: But

Gary: anyways.

Kyle: Okay, moving on. Next segment, money Minute. Uh, we are gonna talk about underlying debt in the economy.

So last week in overtime, if you guys are, subscribe to overtime, if you're not, it should be, it's definitely worth it. Gary just goes completely unhinged. Um, Raven, but you mentioned to me that you felt like the hard times are still coming and that you see the cracks, um, and that, um, from the private lending that you do and stuff like that, you see that there's still, it's, there's rough up there.

There's a lot of debt

Gary: and [00:40:00] equity to get flushed out of the system is my belief. And the reason that is, is because in our culture in the last 25 years, I dunno if I've said this on here before, but I can't say it enough 'cause it's very interesting. It makes people do things they shouldn't do. In the last 25 years in the Fraser Valley, if you bought something, a hard asset land, a house, anything, and you hung onto, it did not matter how much you paid for it.

You could pay any amount and you didn't even need to. You couldn't even afford it. It did not matter if you bought it and you could somehow hang onto it. Through the cycle, through the oh eight, through the 2015 into 1617, saved you and then maybe 20 18, 19 was tough, but that in 2020 they lowered, you know, interest rates to the floor and turned on the printing presses in Covid, and you got saved.

One more time. And now like we're in this weird spot of like, prices are definitely not crashing, but they've come down a lot. Like there's townhouses. I know I sold my very first place I ever sold for somebody. I sold for 8 95 in 2022 in, in the, in the [00:41:00] winter of 20, like January of 2022. And now that place would sell for let's say 6 50, 700.

So that's a substantial drop. 20, 25%. It's quite a bit, especially because the first 25% that you pay off in a mortgage takes I think I, I. Majority of that time because, well, a good chunk of it, like it takes way more than 21st, 25% of your year. Way more than five years, right? Yeah. Yeah. Um, because a bigger portion's going to interest.

So it's fascinating that, um, what I'm seeing is just. At a, in, in the space I'm in is that all the speculative stuff like land in particular, like chunks of land, like I do a bit of, like you said, a bit of private financing with some different guys and there's pieces where, you know, we're foreclosing on people now because all of a sudden they're realizing, you know, well, and the money just ran out.

Before you could just refinance, you waited two years, three years, land went up and off. You get a new appraisal, refinance and that has come to an end. And so, you know, it's just getting tougher and tougher to borrow money and banks. Banks aren't near as at risk because the banks that we have in Canada are risk [00:42:00] adverse.

A general rule, and some of them have gotten in deep trouble. There's, you know, people that, that

Kyle: know me, the rules here are much tighter than the states. That's why the big in, in, uh, oh eight, whatever the big crash that happened was, 'cause the banks in, in, uh, the states were a lot less tight on their rules.

Yeah.

Gary: But in the private lending space, in the space that I'm in, there's no rules. Like you can lend. Fair enough. Yeah. Anybody. And there's, um, I did a deal recently, saw a deal where it's like, basically there's X amount lent. And the appraisal that came in was five times the value, like 5, 4, 4 times the value of the money lent.

And it was totally a bogus appraisal. Like now in hindsight, everybody's doing their due diligence, you know, and. Could it be argued that in time it would be worth that or with everything put together, yes, but the, the piece of dirt that was lent on in that moment. So that's the kind of stuff where the real value and, and this is what drives me crazy.

I hate appraisals. I hate when people talk about what something appraised at, like something is worth whatever someone's willing to buy it for [00:43:00] in that moment in time, that day. That's why I love the auction business because what it sells for, that's what it's worth. Like everybody saw it that. Anybody that thought it was a good deal could have bought it in that moment.

Right? Yeah. And they didn't. So that's what it was worth. Like when people start debating about what value is and they like an appraisal on a house, I'm like. The house is worth whatever, someone paid for it, and you don't get to talk about what you think it's worth or what your neighbor sold for. It's like, no, your place is your place.

Well, you, if you're lending though, you want to have some sort of gauge. Yeah, and they use that. But the issue is, in my opinion, is that appraisers and appraisers would dis maybe disagree, but I feel like appraisers tend to appraise aggressively. They all have often asked me, Hey, what did you pay for it? It should have no bearing what I paid for.

Yeah. Like you don't need to come in high for me to get the bank, for the bank to gimme the money. So why does an appraiser actually base it off of, they base it off other sales, you know, and during that, during that time. Yeah. And, and that's fair. Um, but if they have a bias to do, why would they have a bias to do it higher?

What would happen if all the appraisals were coming in way lower than what needed? What would happen? You would get different appraisers. You'd have a [00:44:00] hard time. Would you have a hard time buying the place? Would you have a hard time getting the money? Yes. You would. And that would stop the cycle, right?

Like it's beneficial for everybody in the game that collects a check. Like exactly. Me as realtors, appraisers, and brokers for stuff to keep going up our whole, so, but if nobody wants to, but, but if you don't want

Kyle: appraiser is like generally like pretty generous and the other appraiser generally gets a name.

Yeah,

Gary: there are, there

Kyle: are those kind of guys. You know, you're gonna be calling always the

Gary: guys that like if you want the money

Kyle: Yeah.

Gary: Yeah. If you're buying something from family and you wanna get a deal, call the cheap guy. It's not supposed to be like that. Right? Yeah. I mean, I ideally, but, okay.

Kyle: So, so practically though, like, if someone listening, what, like, what is, what practically does this difference, does it make, and, and how they should live or, or how they should approach the future and stuff like that?

Because

Gary: my only caution is that when you go into buying the biggest asset of your life, don't assume that it's gonna go up and go up a lot. Mm-hmm. And it's very confu deceiving to people like me that have owned real estate. And I mean, I have bought and sold a lot of real estate myself personally, not as a realtor and myself, and, and done [00:45:00] really well.

But I will be the first to say that it was all about timing. I'm not taking any credit. And so you, what happens when you hit home Runs? Right. You get risk, you, you get maybe take along a little bit too much risk. You get a little naive to the fact that things do correct and you have to be able to survive troughs.

Kyle: Yeah.

Gary: I mean, if you're buying your primary residence and you know you're gonna live there for a long time and you just need a house to live in, and you know what? Rent's expensive. It totally makes sense. I'm not, I'm not anti buying now, or even now, we'll talk about next

Kyle: week. Like, I think like greed comes into play, you know, like a lot of this times if you're, you know mm-hmm.

Or you're spending more than comes in. Yeah.

Gary: Or

Kyle: your host poor.

Gary: It's like you could find a cheap house to rent, but you're like, no, we gotta buy something. And so you're just stretched to like, it's just not a fun way to live. Right. So, yeah, I mean, I get a bad rap from some of my buddies is a Debbie Downer and I'm not, and I would say that everybody should own real estate if they feel comfortable with it and they can afford the payment, like to own real estate.

Like that's, I would say that as a blanket statement. But, but if you, but some people shouldn't, some people don't want the headache of replacing a [00:46:00] roof

Kyle: on a house. Nobody for me. So I sold my yeah. Plate. So I bought my first house in 2015. Yeah. For 2 61. Sold it for seven 50. Uh, then I bought another place for I think nine 50.

Uh, and then I sold it, uh, a little over a million a couple years after that because I couldn't afford the, the payments anymore. Interest rates went from, you know, I think I was under and half to one point a half, half 7%. Yeah. Insane. I was, I was floating. I quit my job. It's insane. It's insane. And so now I just rent now and, um, you know, there's a lot of people like, oh, you should, you have to own, and stuff like that.

Like, you have this and like, no, I'm happy. You don't happy don't have to do anything. No, you don't have to do anything. Like, I, I just, I just need to feed my

Gary: family. And the only reason I'm so pro buying. Is because most of us, myself included, are suck at saving money or I suck at saving money. I shouldn't speak for other people.

It's very hard to save money, even if you make a lot of money. We typically just spend to whatever we have. Yes. That's just human nature. So when you have a mortgage payment, it just forces you to make the payment. Yes. And then by default you're saving money. Yes. And time marches on and it's amazing how, how quickly time goes.

So. If [00:47:00] it's not that you should have some type of Dave Ram, David

Kyle: Ramsey says this, people's like, oh, I just want to, you know, advertise it over 35 years and then I'll just pay it off. Use it solely. That only works if you're saving that money. And most people can't do that.

Gary: Nobody.

Kyle: And

Gary: the thing is, even if you look at our costs of just groceries and, and how, how horrible it's been real, like real inflation.

Like, nobody has that, like Yeah, nobody has extra money, right? That's right. That's right. That's fair. Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how the next I, I think that rates will be a lot lower and then the collateral damage will come.

Kyle: One thing to add to this though is that I think it's really important, there's a lot of fear around this stuff, right?

People like fear being poor or like make their payments or not having these things, or what's gonna happen. Yeah. Am I gonna lose my house and stuff I got, if you're a Christian. None of it really matters. There's one thing that comes up in the Bible all the time, and it's God saying, fear not, no. Like we don't need to worry and be scared, like God will take care of you.

And he promises that and you can trust him like you. He can be trusted. There's so much evidence for that. And so get on your [00:48:00] knees and pray and give it over and life gets better. Yeah, like I've been there and I can definitely attest to it personally. Uh, I think you have to, and no amount of money you'll bring any.

And uh, just shows you how cultural things are different. Like, I, growing up, my parents parents, so I just feel

Gary: like we don't wanna be offensive, so I just thought, Hey, we're gonna try,

Kyle: we're gonna, we don't want a big E on our podcast. That'd be really derogatory. I don't wanna, that'd be really sad. I don't wanna be someone on the podcast that I'm not out publicly, so if I should, then I should work on it privately as well.

I will give you that. Okay.

Gary: I, I knew this would be confrontational.
