Kyle (2): [00:00:00] Welcome back to another episode of The Briefcase in the Barn, episode 39 with me and Gary, a series of the furious, li curious show where we talk about business, life, Christianity, and more. Gary is totally plugged up today, so hopefully this audio isn't totally

Gary: awful, awful. It's getting better already.

Why? Uh, 'cause of those drugs you gave me, you know what I need is more smelling salts.

Kyle (2): Oh, that would, I should grab some.

Gary: I got some in my truck. I think I left them in my console in my truck for, okay. Anyways, that was, I've already forgotten what that experience was like, but

Kyle (2): we can go try it. I can go grab some quick, it's all good.

Gary: We're good. We're good. We'll just go this route. Okay. I'm, uh, pretty short in the hair. Yeah. For those that are listening, you can't see it. I mean, I'm. No ugly than I was before, but definitely not better looking. I let Julius Maljaars uh, cut my hair last night. I've just been wanting to get a haircut for a week or two, but of course it was auction week, uh, last week and it was crazy.

So I just, uh, said to him, you can cut it. But if for any reason I think that you've [00:01:00] butchered it. I get to cut off your beautiful locks. And of course he's pretty vain, right? And, uh, pretty concerned about what his hair looks like. So he was terrified, but he did it. And, uh, business and there were six kids peeking off in the background, give, giving comments.

And, uh,

Kyle (2): it reminds me one year I went to a silver star with a whole bunch of guys, and we all shaved the top of our heads, but left the sides on, okay. We had like a, like the monk look. Yeah, but this is the Razor, like the old man book. And so it just totally bald. And then a couple years later I did it again with me and Malaki during Covid.

Me and Malachi both had, okay. Yeah.

Gary: So the night I graduated from high school, yeah. Well I started drinking the day I graduated from high school. 'cause I had a bet with a neighbor that I wouldn't drink till the day I graduated. So that I got pretty drunk that night, unfortunately. And um. We were at our grad party and some of the other, I don't even know who did it.

I'm, I, I don't think anybody from my grad class listen for this, but some of them shaved a strip right down the middle. And there is, I don't have a lot of pictures from my childhood, but there's a picture of my, of, uh, my mom, uh, shaving the rest of my head off. Uh, the morning after our [00:02:00] grad party, I had one big strip missing in the middle, and, uh, I always think I had a

Kyle (2): gotta do that to my legs.

I was passed that one time and he shaved my legs, but a like big lightning bolt through one leg ended up punching him.

Gary: Did you pass out a lot when you drank?

Kyle (2): Yeah, I, I would go like full pole and then all of a sudden I'd be sleeping, like I remember, um, floating down the Penticton Canal and I would drink rock rockstar vodka, and I would just be like an animal and all of a sudden I would just pass out.

And I would

Gary: Very dangerous. Very dangerous. Yeah. It was on or off. Yeah. I did a lot of awful things when I was drinking. Nothing good happened. That's why I always find it interesting when people encourage me to drink. Now I'm like, bad idea. Well, I just don't even i's like, why would you encourage someone that mostly bad things happen when they drink to drink?

Like, it's so funny how people are, there's so much pressure around alcohol. I, it's very weird. Yeah. People feel guilty to do it themselves. Yeah. And they just want everything to be fine and they want you to be fine. I had that conversation this morning. I I was at a client's house and uh, these people are, are.

Adoptive foster parents like we are. And, and their life is very challenging and they have [00:03:00] lots of struggles. And they were, uh, they were just talking about how people will say pithy statements afterwards, right. And I'm like, people are just, they just want it to be okay. They just want you to be okay. They don't want you, they don't wanna live in the uncomfortable with you.

Yeah. People hate uncomfortable, people hate being uncomfortable. That's why they say weird things like. You know, just relax. When you can't get pregnant, it should tell you just relax. You get pregnant. Weird stuff, right? Yeah. I am relaxed. Which reminds me of the conversation that we, should we segue right into that?

No. Forget it. We gonna wait. Well,

Kyle (2): we, we do have a question. I dunno if we'll get to it today, but how many times should you, uh, uh, how often should you have sex? As a couple, but

Gary: yeah.

Kyle (2): Before we get to that, let's talk about the Canadian federal election. What do you think? Have you been following it at all?

Uh, I haven't seen a whole lot about it, but I don't go on the news. Yeah. I'm a

Gary: little worried that not enough people are gonna go vote. I mean, I'm worried that people are just. I think people, because we're so overed, BS, just overed political messaging from all, all platforms. I think people are just, they feel disgusted by, that's how I feel.

And I mean, I'm, yeah, I, I think it's important, but I just think it's [00:04:00] just,

Kyle (2): I'll definitely go vote. Yeah. I, and I wasn't encouraged that, uh, poly Evan think had like 15,000 people out last night in Edmonton or something, getting some good crowds. Hopefully the polling's wrong. Yeah. I just like thinking about Mark Carney and like the stuff he says.

Like in his book, just that the fact that he, this is the same government that like took people's money outta their bank accounts. It's, it's

Gary: unbelievable. It's, it's un it's baffling to me.

Kyle (2): Just insanity. Yeah. But I think it is a lot of is media. Like if I talk to, I always notice when you talk to old people that, that still listen to CC or Global news or CTV, whatever else like that.

Like they're just, you can't help but have your become a liberal.

Gary: I talked to an 89-year-old lady the other day who's pretty astute. And she was wondering whether she should vote like federal or liberal. And it was simply because, and this is why it's a genius move and everybody's rankled about him getting it, you know, ushered into the spot as Prime Minister of Mark Carney.

But like, he was well respected. I remember when he was the Bank of Canada governor, I remember when he went to the Bank of England. He was [00:05:00] relatively well respected in that role. And um, so I think just a lot of people that are naive and don't understand that it's, uh, you know, the leopard can't change the spots and it's the same.

Package wrapped up. It's uh, it's still dog crap. Just in a different bag. Yeah. I think that people just don't, yeah. I think the idea that, hey, this man. Probably is a better, you know, better skilled in a lot of ways and definitely obviously more financially astute than the last person who had no money management skills.

It's still gonna be a big spending government and I think that they have to, they have to account for the last 10 years and really, we're in a pretty tough spot now as a country. So, yeah, I hope people get out. This comes out,

Kyle (2): uh, my podcast with that, um, Dr. Ed Less will already have come out.

Gary: Okay. Okay. I did not know you had him on.

Yeah, that'll be interesting. I read all his stuff. Great stuff.

Kyle (2): Yeah. Yeah. So he, uh. Recorded a couple weeks ago, and, and so that comes, that would've come out, uh, last week. Did you

Gary: talk about gender stuff with him?

Kyle (2): Yeah, a little bit. Okay. Um, we also talked about the pretty outspoken for,

Gary: for a doctor? For, yeah.

Okay.

Kyle (2): I talked about his story and how he became a doctor and Okay. But, um, [00:06:00] just the conversation of, uh, the, the Canadian medical system and how much bureaucracy is in it and like how much waste. But he says how that's in all levels of government and how bad that is. And, and just like he, he,

Gary: what's the solution?

Kyle (2): He says, uh, um, don't, maybe don't do the chainsaw approach, but use a scalpel.

Gary: Yeah. It's not that simple. With cutting though, eh?

Kyle (2): No. I'd mean both are painful. That's what I said.

Gary: Both are painful. Actually. I would argue that a scalpel is almost more painful.

Kyle (2): No. Well, depends.

Gary: If you had to head your, have your arm cut off by a scalpel or a chainsaw, which would you prefer?

Kyle (2): Whatever's faster.

Gary: Bingo. Chainsaw. It is.

Kyle (2): Yeah. That's very, yeah. Yeah. Get her done.

Gary: Get her done. Yeah. Yeah, the problem is that there's collateral damage, I think more with the chainsaw approach, which is why he would've suggested the uh. So if Mark Carney wins approach, what

Kyle (2): happens to the conservatives party?

Like Paul's out again as leader and you have another No.

Gary: Paul say, no, I don't think so. I think that, I think that those that are financially conservative and people that are sick of the [00:07:00] bs, I think we will just have a even more divided country. Because the reality is everything that Pierre Poly have is saying, which I mean a lot of it he will implement a lot of it he won't.

A lot of it is, is just pandering to the base. And a lot of it, once you're in power, it's easy to beat off when you're in opposition. But I think once you're in government. To make all the hard change. And maybe he will. I mean, maybe I'm selling him short, but I think that there's gonna be some level. I don't think he will,

Kyle (2): I think he's a career politician.

Ed less didn't think he would either. Yeah. Okay. So I'm, you know, he's a, he's a career politician that, yeah, that's not gonna make any changes. Like, you have to get like someone that's on the outside that really doesn't, really doesn't

Gary: care, like say, really doesn't care. He's been living off the system that he's criticizing for a long time.

And I think that even if I look at municipally, like often people have suggested, oh, why don't you try run for city council again? And, and I mean, there's part of me that thinks, Hey, yeah, that's a good idea, but like. Who, who wants to run on the platform? Who wants to vote? First of all, for the big mouth guy who's gonna say, Hey, I'm gonna cut jobs at City Hall.

Nobody wants to vote for that, but that's the platform I would run on. Yeah, I think a lot of people would. I [00:08:00] think that in theory, yes, there'd be some of that, but people have a lot of fear around someone that talks that way. It's negative, like it's not a positive thing, obviously, letting people go. Yeah, I mean, I,

Kyle (2): I think the biggest part is the media.

The media just vilifies those people.

Gary: Yeah. But I mean, ultimately you have a country where things are so dire, like, you know, in South America where people are like, okay. You know what we're willing to give crazy man with the chainsaw chance. Right. And I mean, that country doing a great job. It they, I think most people even, you know, left-leaning people who are maybe Yeah.

You know, would say, Hey, things are, the numbers are showing signs of great improvement there. Right. And there again, corruption in any, in any political party, there will be a corruption in time. And you've seen it in conservative governments over the year too. People that are in power too long, it's not healthy.

And that's why we do have the swing that we have. Yeah. The problem is with the liberal party federally in Canada and our country is that. They are quote unquote the, you know, the natural governing party. And that's literally their attitude, right? And so they come at it with that perspective of always thinking that they should be in power.

And I mean, that was my childhood. And back then, ironically there was the, uh, [00:09:00] sponsorship scandal. I remember that's kind of what I did the liberal party in, you know, 20 years ago, whatever that was. And in hindsight, I mean, that was nothing. It was nothing to the money that's wasted. Now it's, it's, and Saturday it's, it's humorous.

If it wasn't so sad, it would be humorous, but so. Anyways. I,

Kyle (2): I think it's, I think it's awful. I think it's destroying the country. But

Gary: anyways, we'll see. It's out of our control. We all need to do our thing that we can do. Just vote and that's it. And the rest, just have faith and pray for those that are in power.

So,

Kyle (2): yeah, I did read something last night. I was reading Philippians,

Gary: okay.

Kyle (2): And it said, uh, um, uh, the Lord is at hand. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving. Let your quest be made known to God. Um, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus finally Brothers, whatever is true, whatever's honorable. Whatever's, just whatever's pure, whatever is lovely, whatever's commendable, if there's any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. And I think it's really, um, in, like, in in coaching, I often talk about what [00:10:00] you focus on grows.

Yeah. And so there's so much talk about the negatives around us in, in media and everything else that's going on, but God is telling us, Hey, think about the things that are good and excellent and pure and, uh. And I think that's just a good reminder.

Gary: I think the first part of the text is the most powerful Christians never, yeah, Christians never follow that verse.

So funny. It's like literally just don't take it serious at all. It's so funny how we pick certain texts, but like that one, people are anxious all the time. It's considered almost, I mean

Kyle (2): Oh yeah. Yeah. Same with like fear. Like fear not. And there's a lot of, we're scared. We're lots of

Gary: scared. We're not. Yeah.

And I mean, even just not to be anxious Christians are, consider, it's considered a normal thing to be worried about your kids or worried about where they're at. I always used to throw that one at my mouth. How do you, so how

Kyle (2): do you deal with that? So someone says, I'm always anxious. Like, just don't be anxious anymore.

What? Yeah. That really

Gary: helps. That really helps my wifi fight when I tell her just not to worry about it, it'll be fine. So what's the answer? Uh, it's a personal journey. What other people say won't help at all. Usually it's just ultimately, I mean, you could just say, Hey, you,

Kyle (2): God, teach me to trust you.

Gary: You need to do yours.

Yeah. It's your own thing. You're not gonna tell, you're not gonna help [00:11:00] someone else with their, I mean, unless they're literally looking for, but even then, it, it can't come from someone else. It can't come from,

Kyle (2): yeah.

Gary: Like if you're struggling with anxiety all the time, it's, it's a lack of trust.

Kyle (2): Right.

Anxiety is a lack of trust in God.

Gary: It is, but it's more complicated than that. I mean, I think that people that do struggle with. Actual depression and anxiety. You know, there again, it's, it's so nuanced that it would be very scary to say as somebody who's not, yes, that's fair. You don't wanna start diagnosing people, but let's be, I would care confidently say that a lot of people that struggle with, with anxiousness, I wouldn't wanna say they're just not trusting God enough, but they're definitely spending more time.

Probably the people I know are spending more time on the internet. And social media than they're in the Bible. So that would be a starting spot. And then after that, yeah, see your doctor.

Kyle (2): I did it again last week. Locked everything up. All my, oh, for the weekend? Yeah. How was it? It was awesome.

Gary: How many, how long was your phone away?

Kyle (2): So it would've been Saturday afternoon at like one or two o'clock until Monday morning. About Sunday. Oh, Monday morning. Yeah, Monday morning at eight. At seven, I think my first meeting. But Nicole still has her phone. Has her phone. So you could go on her phone? [00:12:00] Yeah, I could go on her phone. She says you go on her phone?

Yeah. Once on do so, go on her phone. But like, so there was no laptops though? No TV method? Nothing. No

Gary: technology. That's awesome.

Kyle (2): Otherwise, I mean, it is anxiety driving, like it just,

Gary: we had the auction, right? So it's just been like

Kyle (2): full pull. Is it all done now?

Gary: Uh, just still cleaning up the carnage today.

So we're recording this a week earlier. So this is kind of like the, this is the worst part, right? Where you get to all the people that are really, really upset with what they bought, don't want to pay for it. You have to threaten them with all kinds of stuff. Some people just don't pay. You try to run their credit card, it's declined.

Yeah. So we were just literally,

Kyle (2): what do you do then? What do you do then? The person that sold it, do you, do you own it then? We

Gary: always take so far, and I mean, I'm scared to even say this out loud 'cause. Thankfully we're pretty blessed and most people, uh, like of course we're out money, but like, it hasn't been like a 150,000 tractor yet that somebody hasn't paid for.

Um, so, so far we always just pay people. And it's funny, even this auction, we had some equipment that somebody snuck in and they knew it was hooch, right? [00:13:00] Now this particular piece, and this is the humor of the, and, and this is not just our auction. This is re youve, this is any auction company, but

Kyle (2): someone said it was a good piece of equipment running.

Uh, they said nothing. Okay.

Gary: Right. So on our terms and conditions sheet, when they can sign something, it literally says, if you are not disclosing something, you know. You, you'll be refunding the repair cost or we'll adjust the price to give us a bit of protection. Well, of course they just say, oh, I didn't know.

You know, I didn't know. So now this item sells for, you know, this particular tractor, let's say sold for 20,000. The person comes to pick it up. Hey, this thing, the PTO doesn't work. Like the four wheel drive doesn't work like this is a five, $6,000 repair bill. So we cut the guy a check for, for some of the money and, and tried to make it right on the buying end.

And then we go to the seller and, you know, I mean, of course we're in the driver's seat, but it's always a relationship, right? Mm-hmm. And so it's like, Hey, how do you, how do you keep peace with the customer? Uh, well being reasonable, but this particular tractor that we had dealt with today that we, I mean we ate, you know, a bit of money on it, but basically that item had been, this is the third time this thing's been in our sale, and [00:14:00] every single time it's been a problem, you know?

So at that point, you're looking at the guys that run the auction company and think, what are you doing? Right? So it's always this Pete thing of like,

Kyle (2): would you go to that customer and say you can't sell on their auction anymore, or.

Gary: We ban people, we, if you do not pay, you get banned. Okay. And there's good people that get banned 'cause they just don't pay and pick up their crap.

And it's like, you know, and you could probably redeem yourself if you pay and pay the interest and come back and make it right. Yeah. I mean, there's forgiveness, but it's like, no, we do not need the headaches. Right? So this auction, there was 1400 people bidding. There was 560 different buyers. There was six, almost 1600 lots.

And you know, we have a 10 day window to move 1500 and 1600 lots. Did everything

Kyle (2): get a bid by the way?

Gary: Uh, there's about five things that didn't get a bid. One guy picked them up, it was pretty cute. He picked up all his owner's manuals from his 1980 DATs and cars and the stuff just, you know, to the right person, probably worth something.

But yeah, you know, the starting bid's 10 bucks and there was quite a few things. Like today, we also signed checks for all the consignors that sold stuff. And there's a handful of items that you know. Like it's, it's pretty sad. Like if you [00:15:00] can sign, we have a $25 lot fee and we have a $250 lot fee on anything with registration.

'cause it's causes so many problems and it's so much of a headache. Yeah. Putting stuff with vehicles, you know, trailers in, um, so some people got a bill sent to, I mean, they don't have to pay the bill, but you know, they can sign stuff and didn't get a check, which is not great. So, but. It's really weird.

Some stuff sold way too high. It's, it's an auction. So, you know, some happens, there's good deals. And it's funny, today we were bidding on another auction, uh, while we were signing checks for auction. We were bidding on another auction. We're like, oh, that stuff, this stuff would've sold better than our auction.

So it's, it's hit and miss. But, uh, the auction in general is, I don't know what your opinion was that you worked there a couple days, but the relationship piece we love. Right. It's pretty interesting. Meet a lot of new people. Yeah. Meet a lot of new people. So,

Kyle (2): okay. On to book report. Oh, book report. Gentle and lowly.

Uh, chapter 10, the book, we're going through one chapter a week. We are on chapter 10, the Beauty of the Heart of Christ. Um, I was kind of started the chapter. I was like, ah, I don't know if I really like this chapter. I was kind of bored, but it ended Nice. I'm with you.

Gary: [00:16:00] I'm with you. I like,

Kyle (2): I like the ending of it, but, uh, I'm with you.

Yeah. It starts with, um, so it goes, it goes over Matthew 10, uh, verse 37. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And so it talks about how Jonathan Edwards in, uh, summer of 1740 preached a Sherman to a whole bunch of kids. And he, uh, he asked them, um, like, uh, what, what, um, um, what would you expect the greatest lo theologian in, in history to say to the kids, uh, kids of his congregation?

And, uh, his main point was, children ought to love the Lord Jesus Christ above all things in the world. Um, and then later on in the chapter, it talks, uh, about how, how we do that, um. But before we get there, what, what were your, did you have any specific things that that stuck out to you

Gary: at the end? I'll wrap it up at the end with it.

Yeah.

Kyle (2): Yeah. So I mean that, that's the end. You

Gary: probably talk about, you always talk about everything. That kind of, I mean, it's interesting how you and I do kind of pick out the same thing. So

Kyle (2): Yeah. So there's one piece that says, uh, um. With our kids, with our own kids. If we are our parents, what's our [00:17:00] job?

That question could be answered with a hundred valid responses, but at the center, our job is to show our kids that even our best love is to shadow, is a shadow of the greater love to put a sharper edge on it, to make the tender heart of Christ irresistible and unforgettable. Our goal. Is that our kids would leave the house at 18 and be unable to live the rest of their lives believing that their sins and sufferings repel Christ as in that their sin is something that Christ would not want them for anymore.

But know that they're, we love 'em so well that they would know that we are reflective of Christ, that no matter what they do, we still show them love and grace.

Gary: So I had a question or a comment or question I guess outta that. 'cause that's exactly what I underlined and then I have a final point here. Yeah.

But do you think that if we didn't realize, if we didn't realize that that is Jesus' heart, do you think we could actually teach our kids that still? No. You don't think so? You don't think you could teach [00:18:00] a truth that even though you haven't experienced yourself, you can still teach the truth? No. '

Kyle (2): cause you teach it by living it.

You don't just teach it, not by saying it. Not just by saying it.

Gary: Yeah. So that, so at the end, but like if

Kyle (2): you, if you teach all these things to your kids and then you're still a hard ass as a dad and never, and don't show grace to your kids when they screw up or like are, or haven't

Gary: experienced it yourself, you're saying.

Kyle (2): Yeah. If you haven't experienced it yourself. Yeah. You know, like, like you're, you're not, you're not teaching them what Christ was like.

Gary: Yeah, so I wrote that 'cause it says on the next page he said he didn't, he talks about his own dad, the guy who wrote this book, Dane Orland, I think his name, dad's name is John Orland, maybe.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. Um, but Dane said he didn't crowbar me into that. He drew me into it. We have the privilege of finding creative ways of drawing our kids. And so I put, you know, you know, we have to realize that first or self. And I find that, you know, and even myself, I find that now and I know better, but like, you know.

We have to, we're often just cramming theology and [00:19:00] doctrine and just. You know, truth, like they're truth, but like the head stuff into our kids' heads or trying to just get, mostly my struggle is just getting, I'm always looking for behavior change. I'm just looking for good behavior and I mean, I always say it, but I'm looking like ultimately, you know, I think most people want heart transformation for their kids, and so I put in there, yeah, so what you said there, that's really key.

Kyle (2): You're always looking for good behavior and that's not who Christ is. Christ isn't just, he's not looking for good behavior, he's looking for your heart. Your no and good behavior will flow

Gary: out of that, right? That's right. And so I put here, and this is one thing I do do with my kids, is that basically whenever I talk to them into bed, which is most nights, I always pray for them.

I pray for that they would know that their mom and dad loved them. But way more importantly that they would realize how much God loves them. Right. And I think that, you know, and I, and I tell 'em, I mean, that's, people are gonna let you down. Mom and dad are gonna let you down. Yeah. I know that. That's just where human beings, as parents, we're gonna fail.

And I think that when parents can't admit that to their kids, they're doing their child the real disservice. Because there'll come a day where there will come a day where. [00:20:00] The kid will have an awakening and realize it. Right. And so it's pretty special if you could just, yeah. Let your kids know that you're, you're in that, you know, human being tour and, and gonna screw up sometimes, right?

So that, yeah, it's a good way to teach the gospel practically. But yeah, I always agree with you. I thought the chapter was, uh, tough flogging at first and then those last, those last points hit home so awesome. Good book.

Kyle (2): Got a couple questions that came in. Okay. Actually, no, these, uh, sorry, these questions did not come in.

I should rephrase that and be accurate. What do I say? A couple question, uh,

Gary: listener questions. We got some more fake listener questions.

Kyle (2): Uh, but, uh, I know, um, these are practical things, um, that, that have talked about is that, first is what should I do if, uh, my 10-year-old wants a phone? What

Gary: you do. If your 10-year-old kid wants cracked cocaine, tell 'em it's not a good idea and don't give it to him.

Kyle (2): Would you, do you have an age? Like would Noah would get a phone?

Gary: Yeah. Adulthood.

Kyle (2): I think there's also different things you can do. Like you can get, um, like punk for example, P-U-N-K-T. It's like literally only texting and calling. [00:21:00] No pictures, no camera, no internet.

Gary: My kid ask me, my 10-year-old boy asks me all the time, how much does a computer cost dad?

Well, he has a big spending problem, so he won't be able to save the money for it anyways probably, but. Just like probably about a thousand bucks. You can buy a computer, but you're just not gonna get a computer. Like you said, you can use our computer. It's in the kitchen. It's not locked up as much as it should be.

So you can hold me to that. I need to get it locked up. But yeah, it's, it's in a public place and yeah, I dunno. I. Yeah, ev there again, that's a personal decision for each parent. You definitely have to teach your kids how to use it safely. And withholding stuff forever is not a solution. No. Like that is how I think I want a parent, but it's just not practical and you're not doing your kid a favor.

Mm-hmm. If all of a sudden people get keys to the kingdom at, at an, I mean, I think there is a, uh, obviously the older, the better.

Kyle (2): I funny Ed, ed Les actually had an opinion I disagreed with on it. What did he think? So he thought it was just like, it's a sign, it's just the times we live in and, and it is what it is.

And so he lets his kids have Snapchat and all kinds of other stuff. And I, and I was like, I would disagree with that. Yeah. I can't.

Gary: Mostly because I think [00:22:00] that you can't, you, you're definitely not gonna be watching your kid all the time. And so if you, if they have those, I would say the apps, obviously the phone's not the problem.

The phone. The phone is the phone. It's like a loaded gun. It's totally fine if you don't pull the trigger. Right. It's harmless. Um. You know, but I think that the idea, and I know people listening, probably everybody has an opinion and a lot of people probably feel guilt over it or their kid, they felt like their kid had to get it for work so they could communicate.

Um, well, the

Kyle (2): worst part is, is that there's, you're, if you're worth holding it from your kid and because it for good reason, but then you yourself are always on your phone, fully addicted to

Gary: it. And so my kids would see that, right? And they'd be like, you know. Pharisee. Alert Pharisee. Alert, hypocrite.

Hypocrite. They haven't started using the word hypocrite yet, but eventually they will call me a hypocrite. Pharisee alert. Yeah. Pharisee alert. No, I mean, our kids do screens. I mean, I, Marie and I, were super happy with the boundaries that we have. Yeah, they get it. What we would consider, definitely enough, there's people that would say anytime your kid's watching it.

TV shows down or anytime they're on the computer it's down. But yeah, there's that healthy balance [00:23:00] of like not starving them from it. And I mean, to be fair, and there again, I don't dunno if that's the right way to parent or not, but in our house, I mean, it's a great motivator. Like if they know they get computer time, they get a lot of work done ahead of time for a very short amount of computer time.

And my kids don't listen to the podcast so I can say that. Plus they wouldn't even care. Like they're just thankful for

Kyle (2): Malachi's birthday's coming up soon and we're getting him a Yoda reader. Y Okay. OTO. Um, just

Gary: reading

Kyle (2): it, it's just, it's audio, uh, but there's no screen. It's like a little box and there's no screen.

And you have little physical cards you put in. There's no ads or anything else like that. And it just plays the story audio. And so we were, he listens to podcasts all the time. He loves those. But podcasts, you can ask Alexa to listen to anything. Right. Does he read books A little bit? Just starting to, okay.

Gary: Okay. So our family, oh, he's pretty young. Our kids are a big reader. Especially the oldest too. Yeah. And I mean, that's a real blessing. I'm not a big fan of what they read. People say it's a face. Like I don't think I would've been allowed to read an Archie comic when I was 10 years old. But I mean, there's kids.

Do you let your kids read? Yeah.

Kyle (2): Yeah. So you're not a fan of it, but [00:24:00] you'd let it go anyway. Like, you're the dad, right?

Gary: Yeah. Yeah. I have my dad. Yeah. Yeah.

Kyle (2): Okay. I just wondering. No, that's fine.

Gary: I don't dunno the answer to that. I'm, my kids do lots of things they probably shouldn't do, but I dunno. I mean, yeah, even like diary of a diary won't be kid or dog man.

Have you heard a dog? Man? No. He, it's just a lot of words. I'm just like, man,

Kyle (2): I do have a Dr. Uh, a dream of, uh, making, um, this into a furious curious media. Kinda like the daily wire.

Gary: Okay.

Kyle (2): And, uh, and like just putting out like good Christian content.

Gary: We have to stop saying the s word on the podcast. Right?

Well, that's kids not Christian. Kids aren't allowed to listen to in our house, this is gonna be one of

Kyle (2): like many shows, but like, have a couple ladies have a show and have a kid show and do like all kinds of like put out. Put out just like good. You didn't buy

Gary: the couches at the Beekman auctions. I thought we were gonna have the big couches here and have the miss in the show.

And I heard those couches sold for 20 bucks each. Oh really? I saw a guy loading 'em in the back of a cattle trailer today. I'm like, what'd you pay for those? It's like 20 bucks. Okay. Oh man. The seller. I was gonna text you. Shirt choked. The seller is for sure. Choked.

Kyle (2): By the way, if [00:25:00] you have questions for Nicole, I was thinking about next week I could record with her.

Gary: That's a great idea. So if you have those, do you think she wants to record or that's just what you wanna do and, well, she's submissive. So to be make we talk, we talk, we talk about Are you that way? Are you that kind of guy where you just make your wife do stuff?

Kyle (2): Uh, no. It's pretty hard to make Nicole thing do things.

Gary: Okay. Well you're pretty stubborn. So

Kyle (2): Battle of the Wheels. Well, yeah, there's two stubborn ones. Um, but yeah, so if you have questions, send those in. We'll talk about, we'll talk about anything and, uh, and, and so we were talking about it, but she's like, I don't want people to know, uh, people are like, who's this?

Who's this girl that, you know? Sticks it out with crazy cop and, uh, she's like, I like no one just being in the no needs to know she's quiet, humble lady. Okay. Okay. One more here. Uh, what do you, how do you lead family devotions without sucking, without it sucking? I. Be okay with it sucking. Just start.

Gary: Okay.

Kyle (2): Well, I thought I'd answer first. You can answer too, but I think that's just start, I mean, there's good devotionals you can follow and stuff [00:26:00] like that. Are people

Gary: worried about it? Do you think people are worried about it?

Kyle (2): I think there's a lot of guys that are feel stuck like that, where there's never model to them growing up and they don't really know how to do it themselves, and so they just quickly, you know, or they don't do it at all or, or they're just very, just like, um.

You know, read verse and say nothing and, and, and, uh, and then just pray with a foreign prayer and close. And, um,

Gary: there's so much content now. I mean, you could literally. You could try seven, like you could probably find everything for free on the internet that you could print off with questions and reading something.

That too. Yeah, I think people are probably too much, but stumbling

Kyle (2): through it. Like, like you're, we're humans, like

Gary: Yeah, kids talk a lot, so I always look at it like, I mean, I've said it on here before, we have those 200 questions or whatever. Like, I mean those are like just, there's all kinds of insightful answers and.

I mean, it's pretty interesting how you could, we could read a little bit like, course, we just read a little bit from the Bible after and then do those questions, and it's always, it's amazing how things will connect or how you could connect the story or just practically, right? Yeah. There's, there's so much practical wisdom in the Bible, so I, I don't know, for devotions, I [00:27:00] don't, we could do a way better job too, but what do

Kyle (2): you

Gary: guys

Kyle (2): do?

Gary: We normally just read something and then we'll ask questions about it, or like I say, the, the, the discussion part more comes from the questions that we answer, right? Because they're loaded questions.

Kyle (2): So you, you question specifically what you're reading. Uh, so we do that

Gary: too, but we also just have those, we have our questions that we answer all the time.

And I mean, I,

Kyle (2): that's not, that's not related to the devotions. It's

Gary: not related to the, well, it's kind of is 'cause it's like. Every, every heavy question is a chance to share the gospel.

Kyle (2): That fair enough? Yeah. Right.

Gary: That's how I look at it. So like I think, I think if people are like thinking it has to be, I think too many people are clouded by the idea of what they think a devotion should be.

Kyle (2): Oh, it has to be a certain way. Yeah. Or a

Gary: certain reading or read from this story or like, I mean, you don't need to entertain your kids, but I think kids can be, I think it's super healthy if they're engaged. Mm-hmm. And I'm finding it with school. You know, you have all different teachers outta school and, and our kids, obviously all kids all learn differently too, but like our teacher for one of our kids this year is so good at engaging, [00:28:00] just tell, just having interesting people come in and just, and the kid listens like they are listening.

Yeah. And so you could say, well I did everything right. But I mean, if the kid never heard a word of it, like then what? Yeah. Or then is it even right. I would say yeah. Yeah. It's similar to church. Right, exactly. It's like what if you have this idea of what checking the boxes and, and having a right worship service, but like.

There's never any fruit. It's like, okay, well are we nailing it or should we be? Is there change and what is it wrong to change? It's interesting how we never change things 'cause we're just such creatures of habit, but I would argue that there should always be some form of change happening. Yeah. In, in our Christian walk corporately and personally.

Right? Yeah. So

Kyle (2): always we reforming. Sanctifying.

Gary: Yeah. Yeah. And then we at our house. Like our home is different than some because I would say that we have children that struggle more, and I, there again, back to the people I met this morning, they don't do dinner together. And there's this deep shame with that in some homes because growing up and even in our home, we have this expectation, but I also think, hey, some people just can't do it and it's.

It's more carnage than it's worth. So they, they have to figure out what [00:29:00] works for them and there's no judgment in that. Right. So yeah,

Kyle (2): everyone's on a journey. Everyone's on the road. Yeah.

Gary: Everybody's on their own journey. Right. So we don't need to be looking at, but I would, but

Kyle (2): I would say that it doesn't also, like, it's easy then to fall on that.

To be an excuse. To not do anything. To do nothing. Or like Yeah. Like it is really healthy. To have dinner together as a family. Like I, I think as Spurgeon has a quote that says there's nothing that Satan hates more than to see a family around a dinner table at night. Like he hates family. Like he's trying to destroy family.

Right. He is doing a good

Gary: job destroying a lot of families. families Yeah. crappy.

Kyle (2): Work, work,

Gary: work. Yeah. Distractions.

Kyle (2): Yeah, distractions, whatever it is. Like go help other people instead of helping your own family. Like all that kind of stuff. So,

Gary: yeah. Anyways,

Kyle (2): that's

Gary: it. That's

Kyle (2): all

Gary: you got.
