[00:02:27] SETH: Um, I did one for the, uh, [00:02:30] there's like this group in Chilliwack. Um, I forget what it's called, but they interviewed me about the, our, uh, garden center opening.

[00:02:36] SETH: So it was like, I think it was- Recently

[00:02:37] 20 minutes. Yeah.

[00:02:40] SETH: It was in, I wanna say April. Yeah.

[00:02:44] GARY: And your family just recently started a garden center in Greendale. How did that go? I've seen lots of social [00:02:50] media posts about it.

[00:02:51] SETH: Yeah, it's, uh, I mean, it's, it's been really good so far.

[00:02:55] GARY: Okay.

[00:02:55] SETH: It was a lot of work starting up. Um, I think we underestimated how hard [00:03:00] it would be to start up a business.

[00:03:02] GARY: What part did you underestimate?

[00:03:04] SETH: Um, probably like the, um, like the [00:03:10] permitting and the building, and then all of like the business side of it you have to get. All the licensing, all the- All the government stuff, all the legal stuff ... legal stuff.

[00:03:19] GARY: [00:03:20] Okay. Not actually growing the plants or any of

[00:03:21] SETH: that. No, that was like, we weren't worried about that.

[00:03:23] That you guys had done that for years. Okay. Yeah, we know that side of it, but it's more like the getting all the business side of it too.

[00:03:27] GARY: Technicalities.

[00:03:28] SETH: Get your business license, and then all the [00:03:30] companies that, um, you have to buy stuff in from, your suppliers and who you're supplying. You have to do, like, credit applications- Okay

[00:03:36] and fill out EFT forms. Even in that space. And it's just like- Okay ... it is [00:03:40] just a lot. Endless. Yeah, endless.

[00:03:41] GARY: It's funny that you would say that because in our new business in Rosedale Tractor, that has been the worst part of the business, specifically the, I would say the [00:03:50] credit apps for companies that... And you mean you do one whether you buy something from somebody one time or many times or, you know, just people, especially big companies.

[00:03:58] I don't know if you're dealing with large [00:04:00] companies, they just have protocol and then-

[00:04:01] SETH: Yeah. Okay. Yeah, there were some companies that my dad had dealt with at, um, DeVry for 30 years, and they still made us-

[00:04:08] GARY: New company.

[00:04:09] SETH: Yeah, [00:04:10] like, "Sorry, you're a new company, you have to fill out credit applications."

[00:04:12] GARY: Oh, it would've pissed him off.

[00:04:13] SETH: You know? Something

[00:04:14] GARY: fierce. Yeah,

[00:04:14] SETH: but I mean, like it's a s- it's a pain, but I mean, if you think about those companies, we heard some stories of some of [00:04:20] them where they got, like- Just holes ... kind of screwed over- Just holes ... for some guys just not paying their bills. Very common. So you have to be on it then, right?

[00:04:26] GARY: Very com-

[00:04:27] SETH: very

[00:04:27] KYLE: common. So. Very common. Well, I think- I remember at, when I was at MDT, I had one dealer that I was just [00:04:30] like, "Okay, this is the one dealer we really need to do terms for." Like, and we never did terms for anybody, uh, or very little people. And I was like, "This one will, will sell a lot. Like, we gotta do this."

[00:04:39] So, [00:04:40] I convinced some of the other people, uh, to get on board with it, and this guy never paid.

[00:04:46] GARY: Okay.

[00:04:46] KYLE: Yeah. The first guy I gave it to. It wasn't that much. Yeah. It was like [00:04:50] 40 grand, but...

[00:04:50] GARY: And that's something that even I think a lot of entrepreneurs really struggle with because a lot of people that run their business are relational people, and they by nature [00:05:00] trust people.

[00:05:00] I think that's part of just being a good business person, you have to be somewhat trusting. People that are completely paranoid will never be able to run a business 'cause they'd just be too scared to do any deals. Um, and then basically I [00:05:10] see where people, like even myself, it's just like, "Oh, let, let them pay later, let them pay later."

[00:05:13] And pretty soon some entrepreneurs, especially small entrepreneurs that don't have a controller or somebody savage in the office, eventually [00:05:20] they have people that have insane amount of accounts over 90 days.

[00:05:23] SETH: Yeah. It's tough. My dad always says that, uh, uh, you should never let an accountant run your business.

[00:05:29] GARY: Never let an

[00:05:29] SETH: accountant- 'Cause [00:05:30] they're never gonna let- Accountants

[00:05:30] GARY: not gonna work out. '

[00:05:31] SETH: Cause risk, risk-averse- Yeah ... controllers

[00:05:32] KYLE: usually are, yeah.

[00:05:33] GARY: Yeah. I would say even a lawyer, I feel like lawyers will screw up more deals in real estate and stuff than anybody else. [00:05:40]

[00:05:40] KYLE: Right, babe?

[00:05:41] GARY: Well, they're paid to mitigate risk.

[00:05:43] So like in fairness, they're doing their job. But the point is, is that you still as an entrepreneur have to make the judgment call or the [00:05:50] decision, right? So

[00:05:50] DUSTIN: And I bet when your dad started years ago, like same with my dad, you used to like shake hands and you just bought a, you know, $25,000 tractor, which is now a [00:06:00] $100,000 tractor or whatever, right?

[00:06:02] That's kind of gone away. Mm. But like there's still times where we're at a show and my dad's like, "Oh, I like this new piece of equipment," and [00:06:10] this is where Robert Lando comes in. I like it that I shouted him out. And like my dad could look at him and be like, "Yeah, no, sounds good. I'll take one." And no, no paperwork was done.

[00:06:18] And that machine would come, [00:06:20] and then a bill would come, and it like shocking, right? And we're talking these could be $250,000 machines for the greenhouse. There's not a lot of that going on anymore, but-

[00:06:29] KYLE: No, [00:06:30] unfortunately.

[00:06:30] DUSTIN: Yeah, no. I, I was reading- A handshake is nowhere, right?

[00:06:33] KYLE: Yeah. I was reading tonight at, at supper time for the kids, um, let your yes be yes, your no be no, and don't like have any oaths [00:06:40] or swear by other things.

[00:06:41] Mm-hmm. And I was trying to teach the kids that I was like, just always just let your yes- Let your word be

[00:06:44] GARY: your bond.

[00:06:45] KYLE: Yeah.

[00:06:45] GARY: Yeah.

[00:06:45] KYLE: Just be straight. I

[00:06:46] GARY: think, I mean, it happens a lot in my world, [00:06:50] but I guess it's just there again, it's just at the level I'm at with farmers, local farmers, they're just trustworthy people.

[00:06:54] Probably the last, one of the last groups of phenomenally trustworthy people. I would say 90% [00:07:00] of dairy guys that I deal with are, you could trust them with your life and you definitely do not need to worry about money.

[00:07:05] SETH: Mm-hmm.

[00:07:05] GARY: Um, just 'cause they, they do what they say and they pay their bills, but... I

[00:07:08] SETH: feel like that's pretty [00:07:10] similar between greenhouse owners as well.

[00:07:11] GARY: Okay.

[00:07:12] SETH: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Because like, I know like some of the local guys here, like, um, that we were dealing with, um, we just were like, "Hey, we need some plants." They send it [00:07:20] over and then a bill a little while later.

[00:07:22] GARY: And you pay within- And they're good, yeah ... a reasonable time, and you would assume that it's not gonna be a problem.

[00:07:25] They

[00:07:25] SETH: know us. They know we're

[00:07:26] GARY: not gonna... I do find, I don't know if you've, you guys have had this yet, [00:07:30] but if you get into, I've gotten into these spots a lot lately where people do owe me and s- and I wouldn't say screw me, but they're owing me for like a year or two. It gets really uncomfortable- [00:07:40] Mm-hmm

[00:07:40] when friends put you in that spot. Mm. And like most of these people are borderline your friends. So at this point it's like, okay, how are you, how are you turning it into like, hey, at some point I have to [00:07:50] call a lawyer. I got like, what kind of legal documentation do I need to threaten you with? And you know you're gonna get paid.

[00:07:55] Like, or for at least in my case, very rarely have we ever got stiffed, but it's just like...

[00:07:59] SETH: And have you reached [00:08:00] out and they like still forgot or just...?

[00:08:02] GARY: It's always, uh, first m- it's mostly avoidance, and that's the first sign that somebody's a problem is that they're avoiding.

[00:08:08] SETH: Mm.

[00:08:08] GARY: You know, people that are a [00:08:10] prob- problem, they're not a pro- like, you know, at least for me.

[00:08:12] It's if somebody says, "Hey, I have a plan," or, "I'm gonna pay you soon," or, "I'm gonna..." You know, I guess if they said that forever. It's when people don't even have the decency to pick up the phone that you [00:08:20] just think, okay, well now we're done.

[00:08:21] DUSTIN: Shane, Shane's a bitch.

[00:08:21] GARY: Now we're done. Now we're done But

[00:08:25] DUSTIN: yeah, no, it is, yeah, 'cause it's, I don't know.

[00:08:28] I mean, my dad doesn't tell us, like, how [00:08:30] many times it's happened over the years, but we have it right now where we have a customer who... So it's a really weird story. I wish Tom was here for it. So Tom and his family bought another [00:08:40] garden center an hour south of us in Mount Vernon. And a year ago, this was known as Skagit Acres, and they bought from us, and now they still owe us [00:08:50] money.

[00:08:50] But they, in the meantime, sold this company to Tom and them. Well, their terms in buying it was kind of odd. It was like a take over the payment thing. [00:09:00] So now we have a business that doesn't exist 'cause it's been sold, but there's a lady who was the owner, she still owns other businesses, that owes us, there's $25,000 out [00:09:10] there, right?

[00:09:10] And some people would be like, "Okay, whoop-de-doo, life goes on." But it's also like-

[00:09:14] KYLE: Hmm ...

[00:09:15] DUSTIN: you know? I mean, but yeah, now it's like we gotta take legal action. Well, [00:09:20] I've called a few people. That's a lot. Good luck. Yeah, no. I... Okay, so we need five more grand, and then we'll try and get your money back . Yeah. You know, or that kind of [00:09:30] thing.

[00:09:30] GARY: Is it close to the highway? I was in Mount Vernon today.

[00:09:32] DUSTIN: Yeah, so if you go through, if you're I-5 southbound, it says VW Skagit. Okay.

[00:09:38] DUSTIN: Like billboard [00:09:40] sign. So like right before you climb Conway Hill.

[00:09:44] KYLE: So back to the flower house. What's it like going from a big greenhouse, which was most of- Lucky

[00:09:49] your life in your [00:09:50] life to like a g- what would you describe it as, a garden center? What, that's the goal? Yeah, a greenhouse

[00:09:54] SETH: garden center.

[00:09:55] KYLE: Okay, yeah.

[00:09:55] SETH: That's what we kind of call it.

[00:09:56] KYLE: Everything you grow is gonna be sold yourself up front. Yeah.

[00:09:58] SETH: Yeah. Well, mostly. [00:10:00] Um, yeah, it's completely different 'cause, I mean, when you go from a large scale greenhouse, I mean, essentially what they're doing- How

[00:10:07] KYLE: many people would've been at that previous greenhouse?[00:10:10]

[00:10:10] SETH: At DeVry, how many employees? Yeah. Yeah. Um- 100. Uh, yeah, I think there was, like, I don't wanna get this wrong, but I think it was, like, 200, um, temporary foreign workers from [00:10:20] Mexico, and then about 50 office staff.

[00:10:24] KYLE: Yeah.

[00:10:24] SETH: But I think the 200 goes up to 400 during the busy season. Right. So like during spring. [00:10:30] Um, well, it's just completely different.

[00:10:32] Um- Now

[00:10:32] KYLE: you're out there watering.

[00:10:33] SETH: Now I'm the water. Yeah. Well, I was a grower at DeVry too, so I kind of did that. Yeah. Okay. But, um, yeah, I mean, it's a completely different business model, [00:10:40] right? 'Cause you go from, um- Low margin, um, high production volume

[00:10:47] GARY: Yeah

[00:10:48] SETH: To now we're at [00:10:50] low volume, high margin

[00:10:52] GARY: Yeah

[00:10:52] SETH: So it's just a completely different structure in the way you look at things.

[00:10:55] GARY: Way better.

[00:10:55] SETH: Like-

[00:10:56] GARY: Yeah, way better.

[00:10:57] SETH: It's... Yeah, risk-wise, yeah. I [00:11:00] mean, like, there's some greenhouses, large greenhouses in the States that are, like, on such a thin margin that if, like, there's any disruption in the supply line- ... they're done. [00:11:10] Like, right now I've heard of a couple that are, like, struggling with the whole tariff situation and the, the rise in gas prices, right?

[00:11:17] 'Cause as soon as you have one of those little things that [00:11:20] spike- Mm ... then kind of messes up everything down the line. Because

[00:11:22] KYLE: they're also big supplying all the big box stores, which basically set the terms.

[00:11:26] SETH: Yeah.

[00:11:26] KYLE: That's another- Right? Like, they're very controlling.

[00:11:28] SETH: That's another crazy thing about the [00:11:30] greenhouse industry is, um, there's no written contracts with the big box stores.

[00:11:34] So all the, um, customers like, um, Superstore, [00:11:40] Loblaws, uh, Home Depot, Walmart, I mean, you name them. Costco. Basically the buyers will come and say, "We want X, Y, Z plant, and this is the price." [00:11:50] And then, um, the greenhouse has to supply them that. But at any point in the time they can be like, "No, actually we're gonna go to that greenhouse."

[00:11:59] So [00:12:00] it's like a lot of risk in your greenhouse A lot of risk. A lot of risk at, at one time. Yeah. So...

[00:12:04] DUSTIN: So-

[00:12:04] KYLE: But it's very consolidated now, right? Like, there's just a lot of really big greenhouses

[00:12:08] SETH: supplying- That's kinda how it's going ... the

[00:12:09] KYLE: [00:12:10] box store.

[00:12:10] SETH: Yeah, the, the bigger ones are becoming bigger, and then the smaller ones are mostly just garden centers- Or selling to the big guys

[00:12:16] or supplying garden centers. Yeah. Or selling to the bigger ones. Contract growing for- Contract

[00:12:18] GARY: growing ...

[00:12:18] SETH: or

[00:12:19] GARY: contracting

[00:12:19] SETH: to the [00:12:20] big

[00:12:20] GARY: ones. So on the, on the, at the flower house, how long is your selling season for? Like, will it go right through the summer into the fall, or at... Well, I'm assuming at some point it would shut right down the

[00:12:28] SETH: front.

[00:12:28] Uh, yeah. [00:12:30] So obviously our peak- Want to say ... we're gonna do some. Yeah. Our peak is gonna be, um, in spring, obviously. Mm-hmm. Um, so we kinda passed that with Mother's Day, but then we're gonna keep going [00:12:40] all the way through the summer, all the way until end of December. Um, so we're gonna go into, like, a summer season, um, which we are not expecting to be huge, but just we [00:12:50] wanna build the customers, um, base.

[00:12:52] So we wanna be open all year round so people know we're there. Um- Okay.

[00:12:56] GARY: Winter too ...

[00:12:56] SETH: and then the only time is probably between, like, [00:13:00] Chris- or, uh, yeah, like Christmas and February, middle of February.

[00:13:05] SETH: Probably shut down for January. Oh, okay. 'Cause there's basically not many- Zero

[00:14:00] GARY: Yeah. It's interesting how all the families stay in the same lines of work. It's interesting how they've been weighing in on so many of the fam-

[00:14:06] DUSTIN: Well, it's, it's ironic that my dad's sister married, [00:14:10] you know, like, it's his mom, right?

[00:14:11] She just married- I guess ... a guy that's in the greenhouse world, right? It like, it so happened that way, you know? But it is funny that it all, it [00:14:20] stayed part of it.

[00:14:21] SETH: But yeah, like when we l- when we, my dad left Devry and my brother and I were both working there, we left Devry. Um, we were kinda like, "Oh, what do we [00:14:30] do?"

[00:14:30] So we kinda looked at a bunch of different things, and honestly, like, we kinda came back to like, "Hey, we kinda like it in the greenhouse. Like, this is kinda what we're used to."

[00:14:39] GARY: It's [00:14:40]

[00:14:40] SETH: what you grew up with. Totally. And this is what, this is what we're used to. This is what we know, and we have all the connections in there still.

[00:14:44] Um, so why would we do something different? It would be kinda dumb 'cause then we'd have to relearn everything, make all [00:14:50] those connections over again. Which you could've done, but- Which we could've done ...

[00:14:51] GARY: you could've done that.

[00:14:52] SETH: But I don't know. We just like that world, and so we figured we'd stay.

[00:15:14] SETH: And they're like on a rotation obviously

[00:15:16] GARY: as well.

[00:15:17] SETH: One and a half.

[00:15:19] SETH: big enough. Like 65,000 [00:15:20] square feet.

[00:15:20] DUSTIN: Because you come up on the road there, it's like, bam. Like, oh, greenhouses.

[00:15:23] GARY: That's what I was gonna- It's a great spot. Yeah,

[00:15:24] SETH: it is. It's a great spot. My dad wanted to go taller, and I was like, "All right, keep it down.

[00:15:28] Not too high."

[00:15:29] GARY: Why? Just for growth conditions- You're [00:15:30] the water one ... or for-

[00:15:31] SETH: Well, I mean- For what? Our-- I guess you could argue there's like, if it's taller, it stays cooler. Church steeple thing? Oh,

[00:15:38] SETH: Yeah. It stays [00:15:40] cooler, but I was like- I like tall church steeples, but

[00:15:42] GARY: I don't know.

[00:15:43] KYLE: Who would have that, like tallest greenhouse?

They do that instantly, try to put you in the angry, uh, right-wing, uh, Nazi camp. But I think she's probably, [00:30:10] from the little bit I've heard about her, is a nice lady.

[00:30:12] The, uh, all the candidates were pretty decent. Like, if any of them had got elected, I wouldn't have been like, "Oh, this is a disaster." And I think some of the [00:30:20] other people will probably be more elect- Like, the lady, so she got 51%. Like, so it's a, it's a ranked ballot system. So every time, like, the fi- there was five people I think running, if [00:30:30] I'm not mistaken.

[00:30:31] And every ti- You had to get over 50% to win. And every time they did another round. So everybody, you did preferential ranking. So you didn't have to [00:30:40] rank everybody. You could literally just pick your favorite, or you could rank all five. And so your votes on the bottom went to the next person up every time.

[00:30:47] And every single round, the bottom person just [00:30:50] fell off, um, until you got down to the last two. I don't know if that makes sense to you, if you're tracking with me. Yeah. No, it does. So it, at the end, she ended up having 51%, and Caroline [00:31:00] Elliott, um, who had never been in political office in her entire life, um, but was like a radio person, um, a media person, very well-spoken, quite a bit younger.

[00:31:09] Um, [00:31:10] allegedly, you know, the people from outside the party, like even outside the province, like well-known people that ran Harper's campaign came in to help her run her campaign. [00:31:20] Um, which did not do her favors, to be honest. It's actually really too bad, 'cause I think in a lot of ways she was a lot more electable at a, at a provincial level.

His first term, he did, [00:50:20] uh, fulfill a lot of those promises. Um, but now he's not. And I think, um, people aren't realizing, like, the, the courts are shutting down a lot of what He [00:50:30] is doing Oh, okay.

[00:50:34] SETH: And I think there's talks he might have to even pay some of it back. And all the stuff he's doing [00:50:40] is, um, all by executive order, and basically that doesn't do anything 'cause if you don't pass it through Congress, then the next president that comes along, if he's a Democrat, he can [00:50:50] just write it and just reverse it all.

[00:50:51] Mm-hmm. So it's like, oh, sounds all good now, but it's not gonna last.

[00:50:54] GARY: Can a president reverse stuff that's ran through both houses easily [00:51:00] with an executive order or not? No. Or then it's into lots and constitutional- Into law, yeah. Okay.

[00:51:04] SETH: Yeah. He has quite a bit of power with the executive order, but in order for it to [00:51:10] last, then he has to get it ratified by going through the House and Senate.

[00:51:16] SETH: Yes, but most of the Republicans are not in favor [00:51:20] with Trump right now. Okay. Not, I wouldn't, sorry, I wouldn't say most, but the, enough to sway the vote.

So as we like sit here and talk about Trump, and I brought [00:53:30] this up last time, Washington State has a giant political mess worse than the country does in a way. Like Washington, Oregon, and [00:53:40] Idaho are, if something doesn't change, and like we can, I can yell till I'm blue in the face and get everybody to vote, it is ugly.

I think maybe they run them all on different years, [00:55:30] but- Yeah ... anyways, in BC for sure, in, uh, Chilliwack, in the Lower Mainland here, it's, and it's very polarized up the valley.

[00:55:36] There's people that are gonna try run under banners in our, like in our [00:55:40] town, which I'm not a big fan of. Chilliwack still has completely independent council. Everybody runs on their own merit as a person, uh, whoever they might be. And I think this year there's some pretty [00:55:50] decent people that are stepping down.

[00:55:52] So I've heard of a nu- numerous people that are thinking of running, which is super encouraging. And there again, I just appreciate people that run, even for this conservative... Like, [00:56:00] they put in so much work to run.

Like, I guess we could purchase another place, but building another [01:01:40] place, another garden center doesn't really make a lot of sense. I think where we chose is pretty strategic. But I think the part of our business that might be scalable is we're [01:01:50] doing young plants.

[01:01:50] So basically we're growing, um, plants from cuttings that we ship in, and we stick them in dirt, and they grow for four weeks, and then we ship it out to other greenhouses.

[01:02:02] GARY: can do a lot of turnover, obviously ... and that you can do all year. You, that... Okay. And is that decent margin, too?

Yeah, and so [01:08:40] they're at, somewhat at a contradiction of each other, and the explanation I heard of that is that when James is writing it, he's writing it to the Gentiles, who didn't grow up with all the rules the Jews did, [01:08:50] and so who came from really lawless lives, and needed, um-

[01:08:53] KYLE: needed correction to li- l- live by. And that, that in the other passage, uh, it was written [01:09:00] to the Jews, who were very much all about the rules and doing everything right, and making sure that you don't doanything on Sunday. Um, that they needed to hear the grace [01:09:10] message, that it's not about, like, what you're doing or not doing.

[01:09:13] Um, and I would say that's probably still the same answer today. So it just depends where you, where you, [01:09:20] uh, lean, kind of, like, how important it is. If you've come from, like, doing everything wrong, yeah, it's just, like, it's important to put sin to death as much as you can, and fight against [01:09:30] it. But it's also really easy to fall into the other side of just being like-

[01:09:33] GARY: I think the bigger challenge may be-

[01:09:34] checking out ... and I, I'd be curious to know your take on it, Seth, but I guess I feel like the minute you get into this, you, people quickly start to [01:09:40] think that their good works are doing something.

[01:09:42] GARY: Like, on behalf of their salvation. Obviously our good works are important for a lot of reasons, but they're not saving, right?

[01:09:48] And it doesn't [01:09:50] feel that way in the way we live in our lives, right? Like, there's so much emphasis on doing so many right things, as if that, like, God is keeping a ledger. And, like, the Bible also says our [01:10:00] good works are s- I think our righteousness is filthy rags or something like that. Yeah. You know, is how the Lord describes it.

[01:10:06] And that concept is just meant to make us realize how hopeless we are on [01:10:10] our own, right? It's really just supposed to bring us to the end of ourselves. That doesn't mean that we wouldn't do amazing things, and that we wouldn't try to honor the Lord in our lives. Um, but it's just- But that-

[01:10:18] KYLE: Yeah ... but when you have faith, you love Jesus, and you [01:10:20] wanna go do good.

[01:10:21] Yeah. Right? Like that, like that, that's a result that will happen. Yeah.

[01:10:24] SETH: I, yeah, I mean, like, if you look at, like, every- everybody wants to do [01:10:30] works naturally, right? If you look at, like, all the false religions or, like, all the religions, um, that have fallen away from the true faith, like Roma Cath- Catholicism, right?

[01:11:32] KYLE: Well, I also think the works side is interesting 'cause it's the list that God gives isn't like, you know- Mm-hmm ... make sure you go to church twice or whatever [01:11:40] flipping rule it is.

[01:12:05] DUSTIN: But- Ah, it's dangerous ... it also is not gonna hurt you- I, I

[01:12:24] KYLE: But I, I, I agree with Se- Seth saying, what, naturally all, all religions push towards works to earn favor with [01:12:30] whatever the God is.

I'm really, I've, like, have had the thief- Yeah ... on the cross question with a lot, or, like, discussion with a lot of people, [01:12:40] right? Like, technically he only had the faith, right? Like, he all of a sudden realized, "Whoa, we're ripping apart a guy that there's a good chance," you know, like, in a simple way.

[01:12:53] SETH: But that's what we're saying. That- We're saying you don't need the works to be saved. You only need the faith. No obedience. But then the works comes [01:13:00] because of your faith. Yeah.

[01:13:03] GARY: things. Do you think there's people out there that are like, they got all the faith, and they're just like, "Forget the obedience"?

And it's interesting, and that's where, I mean, and, and this is 'cause people are human, and they judge. I mean, Seth would have probably, you guys would have a similar perspective, us having all grown up in the same way.[01:13:20]

[01:13:20] But quickly you can see things, and you can be like, "Well," yeah, I mean, you can't judge the heart obviously, but you can, you can just watch people's lives and be like, "Hey, they're, [01:13:30] you're in a tough spot here." Like, you're-

We're reading it every night, and it's a beautiful book, and it's like, you know, there again, we were brought up with, you know, a lot of his teaching would've been the backbone of [01:15:50] kind of what we were taught.

[01:15:51] And, um, and I think that any- if you have, it's like the little game where, you know, you whisper something to someone, and you go around the circle, and the last person says out loud what the first [01:16:00] person said, and the first person said, "That's not what I said." Mm-hmm. And I think there's a bit of that that goes on with our teaching.

[01:16:03] That combined with, you know, the idea of, hey, we're all human beings. We have our bent, and then if you get in this vicious [01:16:10] cycle of people wanting to outdo each other in a certain way. Like, by, 'cause denominations are so splitting, right? Like, and I've had a lot of experiences even in the last week where [01:16:20] I've just been like the weight of just the im- like the, just the weight of how it bothers me so much how many different, like, Christian denominations we have, how we, like, [01:16:30] divide, and divide, and divide.

[01:16:31] It's, it's unhealthy. Like- Well, the bulk- Right? Like- ... of the New Testament, a good jag of it, is literally written to churches to say, "Be unified." [01:16:40] You know? There again, it was very different then, 'cause, you know, it's probably in homes, and it was smaller, and it was less sp- geog- geographical area. But just in today's world, how we just, and, and everybody, [01:16:50] myself included, we find we wanna have that exact flavor of what we think is the right teaching.

[01:16:54] Uh- Or on the other side of it, we literally can't leave because of fear. [01:17:00] That's just so concerning, right? We're like, "Hey, if this is the reason that we're sitting in church," like, that's why. That, that was where my comment came from about being- Yeah, no, and that

[01:17:06] DUSTIN: is, it is scary.

[01:17:07] GARY: You know? Like, I- Like, I remember growing up and [01:17:10] listening to Bible doctrine in school- Yeah

[01:17:12] about how the Catholic Church, and there again, I might be butchering this. You guys can set me straight. You were there a few years after me.

[01:17:17] DUSTIN: Yeah.

[01:17:17] GARY: But it was just like the, the way it was was it was [01:17:20] fear-based. They weren't educated. They weren't allowed to read other things for fear of it would... Like, they kept people dumb.

[01:17:25] The church was kinda like the government, and they kept people simple in the idea of, "Hey, you listen to what [01:17:30] we're teaching us." And it was like, "No, we're gonna break free," and, and Luther's like, "Hey, we're gonna read the word. You're gonna know the Bible."

[01:17:36] DUSTIN: Right.

[01:17:37] GARY: And, like, that's what everyone should be doing in their own personal life [01:17:40] today.

[01:17:40] Mm-hmm. And, and not that we need to be nitpicking church leaders on every last thing. There, there needs to be grace for church leaders too. But church leaders should be willing to have hard [01:17:50] conversations, and I think they are. A lot of them are. But it's very easy to come down with a heavy hand when you're a leader, and I mean, I've been in leadership and have felt that myself.

[01:17:58] I've been embarrassed about it, just how I can [01:18:00] become, like, legalistic towards others or judgemental. But- Yeah, yeah ... yeah, it's just interesting how- But,

[01:18:04] KYLE: but as much as there is divide, I find there's also a lot of unity. Like, I've never been in a time in my life [01:18:10] where I've met more of pe- Christians from different churches that I've felt actual-

[01:18:14] GARY: Connected with

[01:18:14] KYLE: connected- Okay, that's fair ... very connected with.

[01:18:16] GARY: That's fair. Why is that?

[01:18:19] KYLE: Um, [01:18:20] I don't know, I guess 'cause you, you care about the issues, you care about the gospel, you care about Jesus. It's not about your specific- Yeah ... brand. It's like, it's like people are dying around us. People are going to hell. Like, [01:18:30] um- Yeah

[01:18:30] there's, there's actually real suffering. Like, there's, there's a bigger fish to fry maybe. I don't know.

[01:18:33] GARY: Bigger fish to fry.

[01:18:34] KYLE: Yeah.

[01:18:35] GARY: Yeah. Like

[01:18:35] DUSTIN: you- I do get

[01:18:36] GARY: those conversations too.

[01:18:38] DUSTIN: Yeah, the legalistic [01:18:40] thing- Yeah ... like, is the, like, toughest thing on me. Like, in it all, like, simple way of explaining is my in-laws own a restaurant, and it's open on Sunday.

[01:18:49] Well, [01:18:50] like, we all know sitting here, like, you talk about frowned upon and, like, wrong, wrong, wrong. And I'll never forget our first, um, [01:19:00] marriage counseling. After we were done, he's like, "Whatever." I said, "Hey, I have a question for you." I bother with it. My in-laws own a restaurant, right? Like... And he's like, "Be very careful [01:19:10] picking them apart and their restaurant and all that on Sunday, because you're gonna spend so much time worried about that, that you've lost yourself in it.

[01:19:19] They may [01:19:20] have gone generations of that's totally fine." And we're guilty of my 36 years of life up until, you know, this- Yeah ... was we do [01:19:30] nothing on Sunday, right? And like, yes, there's backing to doing nothing on Sunday and all this, you know, six days of labor and whatever, but the minute you start picking everybody else apart on [01:19:40] Sunday, and it's one of the legalistic things, it's probably the biggest legalistic thing, you know, is the people who are okay with what on Sunday, and those- It's depends where, depends where you go

[01:19:47] who are like, "Do nothing." It

[01:19:48] GARY: depends what culture you're in. Yeah.

[01:19:49] DUSTIN: [01:19:50] Yeah. In our culture it was, yeah. And, and, and like, I still, you know, there's still things where I'm like, "Uh, you know," you don't, you don't feel normal with it because you spent so many years that wasn't okay.

[01:19:59] KYLE: Right.

[01:19:59] DUSTIN: [01:20:00] And then now you gotta- We

[01:20:00] KYLE: talked about, we talked about this for like a half hour last episode.

[01:20:02] DUSTIN: Oh, you did? Oh. It comes out tomorrow.

[01:20:06] GARY: Okay, interesting. I forget. I instantly try to forget everything that was said on the [01:20:10] podcast. Okay, disregard. No. No, it's fair. It's your experience. Yeah. It- And it's, uh, I would recommend that most people before you get married, make sure you're okay with, uh, with stuff like [01:20:20] that with your- Yeah.

[01:20:20] Yeah ... with your in-laws.

[01:20:25] SETH: I feel like just the most important thing, just read the Bible and- Yeah ... understand what it [01:20:30] says and-

[01:20:30] SETH: reading ... don't believe- Keep reading ... like, there's supplemental books that you can read to help you grow in your faith, but there's nothing that's gonna be more important than scripture.

[01:20:39] Scripture [01:20:40] is sufficient, so- Mm. I feel like, I feel like a lot of people- Be careful

[01:20:43] GARY: getting in, be careful getting into secondary books.

[01:20:45] SETH: Well, I just feel like people don't-

[01:20:47] SETH: the primary book ... look as much. Yeah, [01:20:50] exactly. There should be more emphasis- Yeah,

[01:20:50] GARY: if you listen to more podcasts and read more books other than the Bible, you're saying, "Hey, you might be in trouble."

[01:20:55] SETH: I'm saying just be careful.

[01:20:56] GARY: Be careful.

[01:20:59] SETH: answers ... [01:21:00] all the answers for every issue. You might not think so, but once you start studying it more. I mean, obviously, like commentaries and stuff are very helpful, and other pastors or-

[01:21:08] GARY: But even then it's just [01:21:10] some, it's literally a sinful- But it's-

[01:21:11] man's interpretation- Right ... of scripture. It's very ter- scary.

[01:21:15] KYLE: Yeah. Gotta be careful. Like, I mean- But also, like if you would [01:21:20] read Calvin-

[01:21:20] GARY: Could you imagine if we had a briefcase in the barn commentary?

[01:21:37] KYLE: No, but I think it's helpful- ... all these amazing scholars- ... when I go to a [01:21:40] pastor and ask for an explanation- ... they're all in the human nature ... of something that I trust. I appreciate that explanation.

[01:21:43] I think that's- Mm-hmm ... I think that's fine. I think even, like, these guys like Calvin and Luther, what they wrote, and some of those reformers are [01:21:50] phenomenal and very useful things. I actually found them so useful because once I started reading them, I was like, "Oh, this is way different than what I- Than

[01:21:56] GARY: what I actually was taught.

[01:21:57] KYLE: Yeah ... than what I was actually taught. And so it was actually really [01:22:00] helpful. Um, so I don't... But just it's primary versus- Be careful ... secondary. Be

[01:22:06] DUSTIN: Yeah. Yeah. I- years ago, somebody once said, [01:22:10] "The day we die, only us is what matters," right? Like, like-

[01:22:14] DUSTIN: r- right? Like, you- when we meet God, it, it's not gonna matter about [01:22:20] your, your...

[01:22:20] Like, it's, it's weird to think. You're like-

[01:22:22] GARY: No, it's important to think about. Yeah. But- That is... Not enough people have that thought.

[01:22:27] DUSTIN: No, I know, and it... Like, it's almost scary. You're like, [01:22:30] "Well, I'm supposed to, you know, be the, you know, the father to my children and the, you know, the husband to my wife and all these things."

[01:22:36] But when that ends, then he's not gonna ask, [01:22:40] "Okay. So were you a good husband?" Right? Like, well, yes, but, like, only you. Like, Judg- God only judges you as a person. And I think it's-

[01:22:48] GARY: I guess I look at it more [01:22:50] like we will never get to have... There will never be an excuse. I mean, obviously, especially for us, 'cause we've grown up in Christian homes and amazing communities.

[01:22:57] But, like, the idea of like, [01:23:00] "Hey, you're not gonna get to use the excuse that like, 'Hey, this is where I was brought up.'" Or, like, no, you had the Bible. Like- Yeah ... you

[01:23:05] KYLE: know? So- And that's why it's so important to read the Bible, 'cause it so clearly says in there Jesus came to save [01:23:10] humankind, the, the race, the human race.

[01:23:12] GARY: He did not wish that anyone would perish.

[01:23:14] KYLE: Yeah, that's

[01:23:15] GARY: right. Very interesting verse.

[01:23:16] KYLE: But when you start reading it yourself over and over, that's when, as an

[01:23:19] GARY: adult- Do you struggle with [01:23:20] concept... Did you struggle with concepts like that as a young guy or not?

[01:23:23] KYLE: What, that?

[01:23:24] GARY: The idea that, like, you know, anybody could be saved or...

[01:23:27] DUSTIN: Like election is... Yeah, that- Election? That, that- [01:23:30] Um- ... that part of it has me still rattled to this day. Election? Yeah.

[01:23:34] SETH: Let's

[01:23:34] DUSTIN: talk about it.

[01:23:35] SETH: Not- What do you mean? What part of it has you rattled?

[01:23:36] DUSTIN: No, no, just, just the thought of, like, there's people [01:23:40] who are like, "Oh, okay, you know, God hasn't elect, great." And then there's people that are like, "Wow."

[01:23:46] There's literally... It, it's a yes or a no [01:23:50] Right? And like, just, just that thought is like, like, it's kind of scary in some ways. Like, as a young kid, when you were like, you heard it, you're [01:24:00] like, "Oh, God's elect," and you were like, "Well, you," you know, you're like, "Well, I hope I'm one of them." But like, as a kid, you're like...

[01:24:06] And that, you know what I mean? And like- Well, you were

[01:24:07] KYLE: taught wrong.

[01:24:08] DUSTIN: Yeah. You were taught wrong. I hope

[01:24:09] SETH: I'm one of them. Yeah. It's [01:24:10] just, you- Yeah ... I think it wasn't explained- Yeah ... correctly.

[01:24:12] DUSTIN: No, exact- It was pretty selfish ... and I think that, like, you know, enough years of it explained as like, "Well, there's elect and there's not," you know, like, it's like, [01:24:20] "Whoa."

[01:24:20] KYLE: It's like a bingo card, man.

[01:24:21] DUSTIN: I, that's, I was gonna say a flip of a coin, right? Like, it- I don't like to discuss it that way, but it, but it really is, like, when I was 10, it was kinda like, [01:24:30] "Okay," like, and

[01:24:30] KYLE: it's like- Well, that's why, that's why you could go crazy and be fatalistic and drink your face off, 'cause it was just like...

[01:24:35] Well, that's what was my thinking anyway, 'cause I was like, "I'm, if I'm saved, if I get zapped, I get zapped." Like, [01:24:40] I mean, it sounds terrible, but literally-

[01:24:42] GARY: Yeah, I g- I've never, I...

[01:24:43] DUSTIN: Well, it's-

[01:24:44] SETH: Yeah, it's like a road, a road with a ditch on each side, where you have, like, free will, and then, um, [01:24:50] God's sovereignty, where it's like you have to m- you have to have that fine line.

[01:24:54] Because, um, if you are unsaved and you die, whose fault is it? [01:25:00]

[01:25:00] GARY: We were always taught that you would still be responsible.

[01:25:02] SETH: Right.

[01:25:02] GARY: For sure. Um- That was always taught ...

[01:25:04] SETH: but if, uh- You know

[01:25:06] GARY: You would disagree with that?

[01:25:08] SETH: Um, w- yeah, I do-

[01:25:09] GARY: Just let Seth [01:25:10] finish his thought. Yeah.

[01:25:10] SETH: So if, if you're, um, if you are not a believer and you die, it's your fault.

[01:25:17] But i- who saves you? [01:25:20] Uh, do you save yourself? No, God saves you. No. Yeah. So it's like both things are true at the same time.

[01:25:27] GARY: Bingo. Both true

[01:25:28] SETH: at the same time. It's like a, a, a [01:25:30] paradox. It's like we obviously can't understand it because, okay, God knows from eternity past, um, that he's gonna... that one of us will become a believer, [01:25:40] and then the other person will not become a believer.

[01:25:41] Well, wasn't that super, like, unfair of God that he's gonna let one person? Well, no, because it's completely your fault for not agreeing with him, and it's like, "Well, how does [01:25:50] that make any sense?" I've had a lot of friends that, like- Wrestle with these things? ... just can't. Yeah, they just really wrestle with it, and I feel like we're-

[01:25:56] GARY: Do they wrestle with it at a personal level, whether they can be saved or not, or [01:26:00] whether it's fair?

[01:26:00] Whether it's fair. Or the equality of whether- Yeah. Okay.

[01:26:02] SETH: So they, they're believers- It's

[01:26:04] KYLE: a very important distinction.

[01:26:04] SETH: Yeah. They're believers- Yeah, that's why I'm asking ... but they wrestle with, like, the fairness of it, and how can God, how c- [01:26:10] how can a good God do that? But I feel like- Mm-hmm ... we're trying to put God, omnipotent, infinite, into our human brains.

[01:26:18] GARY: Frame of reference, yeah. [01:26:20] It's

[01:26:20] SETH: a great way to say it. And it's like you can't, you can't do that. I feel like you need to, you need to realize who we're speaking about. Who we are. Who

[01:26:26] GARY: we are.

[01:26:26] SETH: And who we are. Yeah. Like-

[01:26:27] GARY: Yeah ...

[01:26:27] SETH: we have... We're not able to [01:26:30] comprehend who God is and, uh- Yeah ... how he works. Um, so, and then you- if you think that he knows, like, um, if he's infinite and he's everywhere at all times, then [01:26:40] how does he not know everything and doesn't know?

[01:26:42] It's just like, it's

[01:26:43] GARY: really hard to understand, but- Let me ask you this question. Do you think there's people that, that, um, that desire to, [01:26:50] to become Christians, to be saved, and to know the Lord that, that cannot be? That God would say no to them?

[01:26:59] SETH: No. No.

[01:26:59] GARY: Okay. '[01:27:00]

[01:27:00] SETH: Cause he sees no delight in the death of the wicked.

[01:27:02] GARY: Yeah. So that's where people, I think people probably need to spend more time, at least from where we come from, meditating on those [01:27:10] thoughts and on those verses. Mm-hmm. More time in scripture. 'Cause it's very interesting to me as I read through the Bible now, having, wearing both hats and having deep theological s- [01:27:20] spiritual discussions with people, like even after Julius' wedding, with young guys, and it's just like people are wrestling with these things, right?

[01:27:28] Mm-hmm. When you, you know, and peop- like if [01:27:30] you are, if you've been taught the Bible and you know how, and you b- and you, you know, you basically know heaven and hell are real, and you, you, these thoughts are, you know, on your mind, it's like, hey, you can drink them away sometimes, but there's [01:27:40] times when you're sober and you're thinking about it, and it's weighty, right?

[01:27:42] Mm-hmm. And a lot of people, the, the general sense I get is that people sit in this spot, especially when you get in the far end of kinda, you know, the [01:27:50] sovereignty of God conversation of, you know, and trying to f- basically they're trying to figure it out. But they get into this head space where they think like, "Hey, I," like, "I want..."

[01:27:58] I've heard people say it to me. Like, "I [01:28:00] wanna be saved and I can't be saved." And I'm like, "Well, that's just not biblical."

[01:28:03] KYLE: Well, I, I would- Like that- ... agree. They don't wanna be saved. Like, how many of those guys that are saying that are actually spending 20 minutes, half hour every day reading the [01:28:10] Bible

[01:28:10] GARY: or being like- No, some of them are, man

[01:28:11] "And God- And some of them, Kyle, some of them are- ... and

[01:28:12] KYLE: God show me-"

[01:28:13] GARY: N- no ... because if you can- They may not be praying that prayer. I think, I believe, that part I would agree with. Maybe they're not praying that prayer. "Hey, God, [01:28:20] literally show me in your Word here how I can be saved." Like, they might not be praying that.

[01:28:23] But people through habit and through discipline Some of them spend much more time in the Bible than a lot of cr- people that are- I,

[01:28:29] SETH: [01:28:30] I was reading the Bible every night before-

[01:28:31] GARY: Okay ... I

[01:28:31] SETH: was saved.

[01:28:32] GARY: Wow.

[01:28:32] SETH: I, yeah, it's-

[01:28:34] KYLE: But were you seeking, like, w- was the initial-

[01:28:36] GARY: What is your thought process? Checking the box basically at that moment, knowing that it was a good [01:28:40] thing to do?

[01:28:40] Yeah, it was just something

[01:28:40] SETH: that I should do. Okay. So that's what I said- That is impressive ... I read the Bible, and I think- That is impressive ... I read the whole Bible through, even-

[01:28:46] KYLE: But wh- and what it, but wh- and what it sink in- That is so fascinating ... what you were reading?

[01:28:49] SETH: I [01:28:50] mean, it's kind of hard to

[01:28:51] GARY: remember.

[01:28:51] Your heart was hard.

[01:28:52] KYLE: Because,

[01:28:52] SETH: uh- It, yeah, it just, like, it's, it's really crazy to think about it now, because I feel like, you know, when you're, when people say, like, oh, their eyes were [01:29:00] opened, and you, it's like you're reading something completely different, it literally was. That's how it is for me now.

[01:29:04] That's how it is. That's how it is for me now too. But for me, like, I feel like a lot of people in our circles think it's just gonna be like a switch, [01:29:10] like a Paul on the road to Damascus kind of thing- Yeah, that is a- ... where it's suddenly. Mm-hmm. But for me, it was just a slow, gradual God working in my life.

[01:29:17] It was-

[01:29:17] KYLE: Well, that's how belief usually works. Like, if you think of the word [01:29:20] belief, how you get, gain a belief in something stronger over time as you do through evidence.

[01:29:24] GARY: So do you think that the idea of that defining moment is too strongly pushed? Like, is there a lot of people asking, [01:29:30] "Hey, what, what moment were you saved," or, "When did God..."

[01:29:32] Do you feel that? Like, is that- I think so ... kind of what's asked?

[01:29:34] SETH: I mean, I think obviously there are people that have that.

[01:29:37] GARY: Yeah.

[01:29:37] SETH: I can't, I can't- But some don't ... deny that. But some don't. But I think a [01:29:40] majority of the people probably- Okay ... have a slow process that they're saved. Okay. I mean, obviously I don't wanna assume anything, but I think that is kind of-

[01:29:47] GARY: Okay

[01:29:48] SETH: an undertone.

[01:29:49] GARY: Okay. That I [01:29:50] w- Interesting.

[01:29:50] KYLE: It reminds me of John, like how he writes in the Gospel of John, "I'm writing these things to you so that you would believe that Jesus is the Christ." Like, his whole intention was to you, [01:30:00] not that you would doubt, but that you would believe that he is actually God.

[01:30:04] And, uh, um, to think about that was his purpose of, like, you know, if someone g- writes a letter to you, and I'm [01:30:10] like, "Hey, my, my purpose is to convince you that Flower House is the best," right? Like, and it's a big thing, that that's, that's the goal of it. And I think that we don't read the Bible that way enough either.

[01:30:19] It's just like, [01:30:20] hey, someone's trying to convince you that you would actually be- become saved. Like- Mm-hmm ... and you read it with a different angle. And so if you actually w- want it, well, you'll find it. [01:30:30] Yeah.

[01:30:30] GARY: Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for sharing that. I think that's super helpful for people, 'cause I, like I say, the more I talk to people that struggle with these things, [01:30:40] like I guess in my life it was probably a little more defining, and that to me is, has been helpful.

[01:30:44] But I can also see many people's lives where, yeah, they wrestled with things a long time, and then their, [01:30:50] their faith is growing and then, but they are always still doubting 'cause they've just been taught that it's so important to doubt and-

[01:30:56] KYLE: Just crazy.

[01:30:56] GARY: Yeah. Well, it's crazy. I mean, it's, I had- If you say it's crazy, but if, [01:31:00] if that's how you're taught, like-

[01:31:01] KYLE: That's right, yeah.

[01:31:01] I mean, I was in a place where I-

[01:31:02] GARY: The teaching of our youth is pretty powerful

[01:31:03] KYLE: I had a defining moment, and my life didn't change. I would say maybe for a little while it did, but for the most part it didn't change a [01:31:10] lot. And then re- in the last three, four years, it's, I haven't had any defining moments, just a lot of changes.

[01:31:17] And now I feel like it's more real than ever, and I don't have a defining [01:31:20] moment, so. And I don't even know the first time if it was true. Like, I don't even know how you measure that, but I believe it, but- But

[01:31:25] SETH: I will say that growing up and all of the teaching that I [01:31:30] got at TCS and churches and everything, it a- it helped me a lot, especially with like Bible memorization and with understanding like the core principles [01:31:40] of Christianity.

[01:31:40] Okay. Like, I mean, that was very beneficial to me. I wish that I was saved back then so I could have retained a bit more of it and actually paid attention in [01:31:50] Bible class and not just messed around. But, um, yeah, for me it was, it was, it's been really helpful to have that base there. So I, I can say I was thankful for that, for sure.[01:32:00]

[01:32:00] GARY: Yeah. It's interesting, 'cause my wife doesn't have that as much, and she's always, jealous is not the right word, but just is in awe of, and even like our kids have gone to like [01:32:10] Bethel Preschool, and just the amazing Bible teaching and the, yeah, just I th- I think even like at our church we do it well too.

[01:32:16] We put a lot of emphasis on the weight of how important God's word is. But there they [01:32:20] really do it, right? Just do it extremely well, right?

[01:32:22] DUSTIN: Mm-hmm.

[01:32:22] GARY: I guess it's the doctrinal- Yeah. Mm. Some of the, yes, it's some of the doctrinal areas where it's like, hey, I think [01:32:30] when things get overemphasized, it's not that they're wrong.

[01:32:32] I mean, this, we talked about this a lot last time. You're not wrong. Now it's all coming back to me, the, the conversation. I feel like we're regurgitating it. But it's just that weight of, [01:32:40] hey, where you put emphasis, if you do it enough, you can s- soon be in- I don't wanna say false teaching, but you can just definitely be in the camp where, hey, you're not telling the whole story here.

[01:32:49] Yeah. It's not the [01:32:50] whole story of the Bible, right, if you're just cherry-picking verses, but

[01:32:52] KYLE: yeah.
